We are back from our adventure in Daytona Beach and are happy to report that we have survived our first bike week! Albeit barely, as we worked every day for Roar Motorcycles for Women (www.roarmotorcycles.com) since they covered our expenses to come down and help them for bike week and we had only a few hours of down time. The weather was cool, so cool in fact that the locals were complaining that this is the coolest winter they've had in a long time. To us of course, it was a heat wave and as we were running around in our t-shirts soaking up the rays, the locals just cocked their heads and looked at us...
We spent the majority of the time at the Roar dealership on Bellevue Ave. and half a day down at the satellite store at the intersection of Fairview Ave. and N. Beach Street. Les reverted to his salesman skills from his former life in retail and he sold a bike, "Angel." I almost sold a bike but as you know, almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades! I did however sell a paint job and can't wait to see the pictures when it's done, as Roar's airbrush artist does incredible work - check it out at www.infernoairbrush.com.
Some exciting events at Roar: NHRA's Pro-stock motorcycle racer Karen Stoffer was there signing autographs as was three time hall of fame inductee Cristine Sommer Simmons, autographing copies of her new book The American Motorcycle Girls 1900-1950 (she is also the author of the children's book Patrick Wants to Ride) and with her was Gloria Struck, who is featured in the book (Gloria has been a member of Motor Maids since 1946 and at 84 years young, she shoveled snow to get her Harley out of her garage in New Jersey and rode to Daytona). CBS news was at Roar filming for a segment they're doing on women in motorcycling and interviewed Gloria. They also filmed Roar's Sisterhood Ride, on which I was a group leader so maybe I'll make the edited cut that airs on CBS?? Also at Roar, we met Cris' husband, Patrick Simmons of The Doobie Brothers (!!), former WWF wrestler Jake "The Snake" Roberts and his wife, who now distribute Waxing Frenzy (incredible products - check them out at www.hammerheadboatworks.com), and Matt T. of last season's The Amazing Race Green Team.
For the little free time that we had, we drove our rental car on the beach (way cool) and around the famous "Loop" along the the intercoastal waterway, although we surely hope to go back and do it on a bike someday! We got to walk N. Beach Street and check out all the vendors and yes, we made sure we spent one night on Main Street, an experience one has to do at least once. For those who do not know, Main Street is a strip of bars, shops and restaurants that are packed with all kids of bikers and bikes and where all the crazy stuff happens! We went to an industry party at The Blue Grotto as guests of the Dan Lawson Band (www.freewebs.com/danlawsonband) where we ran into legendary bike builder Dave Perewitz.
