Snow SNOW SNOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

I don't know about the northern areas, but down here in the south, (New London County) the tropical weather continues, The only thing I can say that is good, is that, at least the snow from the last storm has gone away before the snow falling now started.  It keeps the piles at the end of the driveways shorter.

The Harley vs Ridley Lawsuit.

The following is from the Ridley Motorcycle Company...

Ridley Motorcycle Company announced today that it had reached a settlement with Harley-Davidson in a lawsuit the manufacturing giant brought against Ridley over the trade name Auto-Glide in 2003.

As part of the settlement agreement, Ridley has agreed to discontinue use of the Auto-Glide name in any future models. The full terms of the settlement have not been disclosed as part of the settlement agreement.

The case was tried in the Eastern District of Wisconsin Federal Court in August 2007, but a verdict had not been announced before the suit was settled. Ridley introduced its automatic transmission Auto-Glide models in 2003 and remains the only U.S. motorcycle manufacturer to offer a fully automatic transmission.
============================================
Harley Davidson's concern was that fact that Ridley was using the "Glide" name, which Harley uses for a large portion of their production. ie Wide Glide, Electra Glide. What makes me wonder is how Harley has been deemed the "owner" of the name "Glide" when GM has been using the name in their transmission series for years. It would be written across the back of the car. Hydro-Glide, and Power-Glide. Did GM sell the rights to the name?

Our Founders Dealership Motorcycle: Indian, goes nationwide.

According to a news article at http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/

Indian Motorcycles cleared the final hurdle to becoming available in all 50 states after passing the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) stringent emissions standards last week. This clears the way for the American motorcycle

Indian Motorcycle's Power Plus engine is now CARB certified. manufacturer to open its first stores in the Golden State, one in Los Angeles on the Pacific Coast Highway in Harbor City and the other in Fresno. The opening of those two stores and a third in Calgary, Alberta, will give Indian Motorcycles a total of 22 dealerships.

Indian’s proprietary V-Twin engine had already passed EPA standards mandated by other states, but the CARB certification goes beyond the EPA test by issuing regulations on evaporative emissions. Indian Motorcycles began rolling motorcycles off the production line of its Kings Mountain, North Carolina, headquarters in 2009 but couldn’t tap into one of the largest US markets until last week.

The Indian Motorcycles are powered by a 105 cubic-inch Power Plus mill that uses a closed loop fuel injection system. The big V-Twin has a stainless steel 2-into-1 exhaust system equipped with a three-way catalytic converter.

For 2010, Indian is offering five variations of its Chief motorcycle - the Chief Classic, Chief Dark Horse, Chief Bomber, Chief Roadmaster, and Chief Vintage.

New Years Day

Registration to get your feet wet for the New Years Day Plunge starts at 11am. (That's for Mister Adams benefit). We will be meeting for breakfast at 9am at Norm's Diner, Mark and Brenda's place, (Not this Mark and that Brenda, the other ones). This should leave time to Chew the fat, (as in talk, I am not insinuating that the food at Norm's has Fat.) from Norms we will move to Eastern Point Beach in Groton for the plunge.

The weather forecast for the day is snow. If it is then cars will be the order of the day. It is suppose to be cold. (Last year was) dress appropriately.

Last year after the plunge we headed to the Five Corners in Groton for coffee at D&D. probably do the same this year.

New Years Day is Coming SOON.

A Day to RIDE , Weather permitting, last year the 6" of snow on the roads put a slight damper on that notion.

Look's like another day, we get up, bundle up and head to Norms for Breakfast, then a run down to watch the strong of will (low on reason) souls run into the Ocean.

It is on again this year correct?

It's that time of year when we put together our annual bus trip to NYC. You can't get there yourself, park, and enter the show

yourself for a better price!

All the latest and greatest will be there for this first show of 2010 so DON'T MISS IT!!

Thursday, December 24, 2009

From the Webmanager...you know her,,,right?

I was talking to the President of Capitol City Ryders, Kenny, about their 7th annual bus trip to the International Motorcycle Show at the Javits Center in NYC on Saturday, January 23rd. The cost is $55 per person, which includes the motorcoach ride and admission to the show. So far there are 5 buses running from different areas of CT: northwest, central, eastern and southeast. He said if there were about 25 people from the New London area, he could schedule a pick up there. If not, then the closest may be New Haven (he'll have a better idea after Christmas). Attached is the postcard with their website and contact information

Thank you,

Adriane

Christmas from Jim

Twas the night before Christmas, I snuck down to the garage
Getting a glimpse of iron steed, covered and charged
Though I knew it was late and I should be in bed
No patridges or sugar plums would dance in my head

Now dreaming of the season past, not so long ago
Wondering if winter will I last, not playing in the snow
The thrill of the thunder, and the riding for miles
Is really the thing to my face bring smiles

Tommorrow I wonder what I'll find under the tree
Is there a small box, could it hold a key
There may be a large box, oh my what could it beSpark plugs, chrome or a case of oil for me

A Merry Christmas to all of you, my great friend's
Riding together again the weather depends
Enjoy the Holiday, as this year will end
We have great hopes and plans for 2010.

Everythings a Changing

Hello, fellow NLMC Members -

With the New Year comes a little sprucing up of the NLMC website! When the holidays are over, please take a moment to visit your club's site, it's there for you as well as the public! www.newlondonmotorcycleclub.com

The Home page has been updated with an expanded "About Us" section and a downloadable NLMC brochure. The photo slideshow has been moved over to the larger column so that the photos are larger and more visible (the Governor is still around, she has just been relocated to the In the Community page). Oh, and you'll probably notice the new background picture of the Indian Motorcycle at the top! The Announcements section is updated on a regular basis and currently information on our booth at the Expo and the 2010 bike blessing information, which has also been updated in the marquee.

The Calendar page has been re-formatted on the top to more easily see what's going on. As always, the interactive calendar is frequently updated with not only NLMC's but other club's events too! Just click on the event to see the details. Did you know you can print the calendar? Directions to do so have been added, as well as the new 2010 bike blessing flier and vendor applications!

The Members Only page has a new business directory for members, some with special offers for members (see the newly added electrical work offer by Steve Natale). We are also working on a new section for this page over the winter, so stay posted!

The For Sale / Wanted page has several goodies that would make excellent gifts any time of year! Check out the newest additions for sale: Bob Tyler's Goldwing, Tulani Gant's Vulcan, and a brand new open face helmet with dual visor from Vince Howe!

The Long Riders page has been updated with the 2010 trips. As more details become available, this is where they will be posted. Hope you can join the fun on one or more of these long weekend trips!

As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please e-mail me at webmaster@newlondonmotorcycleclub.com. Thank you!

Happy New Year!

So...What's the AMA have to say.

Bored to death at work today, waiting for the Christmas party to start, drinking a scotch and coke and since we have nothing going on to report, I figured I'd see what the AMA has for news.

And here's what they have:

Federal regulator modifies enforcement stay and testing deadline for kids' dirtbikes and ATVs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously (5-0) to extend a stay of enforcement on testing and certification of many regulated children’s products. While enforcement of specific CPSC testing requirements has been stayed, the products must still comply with all applicable rules and bans.

Winter Hill-Climb

Twas the day before Christmas and I was sitting at work this morning, staring at my bike. (All winter it talks to me, every-time I walk by it, it says,"let's go for a ride"). I looked out the door and on the opposite side of the parking lot there is a giant (iceberg giant) pile of snow. And I thought to myself, Hill Climb. I examined the area between the garage door and the hill, and figured there should be enough room to get up the speed needed. problem is that section of lot is in the shade and is covered with packed snow and ice (and will be until April). But a little balance control, and I should be able to do it. So I figured I can set up the video camera and go for it. Then reality set in...700lb bike moving at 45-50 mph meets a giant pile of snow... how far up the hill where it go? It won't ...I can see myself shooting straight into the pile and burying myself and the bike 10 feet in. But you know that might be fun too. Funny anyway....So....Maybe....

It will be a long day today.

Where to go, What you can get, and Why it may hurt,

What can you do if you have nothing better to do and want to relax, a hospital can be nice. They have television, a contour multi position bed with sections that move to keep your muscles working. Let's not forget room service and drugs that can relax you to get that rest you can't get at home. Sure they wake you up to stick things in your arms (and other areas) but you name one 5 Star hotel or Spa that will strain your urine. Sure they might do your orange juice, but who else will go that extra distance for you. A hospital can be a wonderful vacation away from home, You get to lounge around all day long in practically nothing and people only have nice things to say about you. You try walking up your street with a backwards night gown and your butt hanging out and they call you a pervert or worse.

For those of you that haven't had a kidney stone.... and wonder why they form and why they hurt so much... There are a few different reasons and types, Calcium being one. The main secret is to drink a lot of fluid and keep the system flushed.

Why do they hurt so bad, they just sit in your kidney, until they pass. Not even getting into the "passing" part, (the thought of a rock coming out of me through an area not intended to handle gravel makes me cringe). But picture a almost alien looking piece of space rock, or a sea urchin sitting and moving against the soft tissue of a kidney. In the case of a Calcium kidney stone, picture coral, that marine lifeform that builds and dies and builds and dies, that when stepped on will slice your feet open moving around inside of you with every muscle flex or movement.

For those of you who can't picture what a calcium kidney stone may look like... here you go.

So the next time you hear someone has one of these you may have a better understanding why it hurts, and you may also see why I don't want to discuss passing one.

oooooh PARTAY

We are still going to have a Post Christmas Party in Mid-January. So if you bought gifts for the party hang onto them, and we will leave the place decorated until after that event.

Saturday, December 19, 2009

BUT!!!

Yes it is true, the weather has cancelled the party, BUT, (I like a big Butt), BUT...There will be a get together  (I am told) on Monday night, Not a party,a "get together".

Why you may ask...The answer is FOOD. (With this club isn't it always). You see the Christmas Party was Pot Luck, everyone brings something that way you can have what someone else brought and don't have to eat to your own cooking.

So you see, everyone made food, and since they don't want to eat it,they need a place to give it away, So...Monday night "Get together".

Bring allthat stuff you made, and it'llbe eaten. And you can goof off amongst friends.

Monday, Dec. 21, 2009

BYOB-No gift swap
6:00pm until the last party'r leaves

I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas...

Everyone wants a white Christmas... I like a White Christmas..I like to wake up on Christmas morning and find snow, don't you? I prefer it to be gone the next morning.  The problem is, it comes at other times than Christmas...and sticks around.  When it does, some people go out and play in it, but most of us stay inside where it's warm and dry.. You just can't do all the things you like when it snows, the roads turn to crap, then the towns and states rub salt into the wound by adding salt to the snow, which makes slush, Cars get covered in it...lets face it, snow is a mess, and unlike rain you have to shovel the junk. The other problem with snow is that things get postponed or cancelled. Mothers are stuck at home with kids on a school day when the kids should be someone else's problem, the teachers. There are all kinds of things you can't do in snow,,,

CHRISTMAS PARTY CANCELLED!

SEE YOU IN 2010!

See what I mean...Snow sucks!!!

Thursday's meeting...Wot happened?

Wot happened?  Let me tell ya. Before the meeting we had dinner, Bob created a great meal with baked chicken breasts, Baked taters, Honey carrots and Ceaser Salad. Damn Good.

Turnout for the meeting, was, what can I say...low. must be the Cold and lack of riding conditions, although two bike did show up, Carey and Bob Y.

While most of the meeting was fast, there was a slow point when a Ammendment to the By-laws was proposed and discussed. The Ammendment has been posted on the board behind the E-board, be sure to check it out, and we wil be voting on it next year. That's right, next year, There will be no meetings for the next two weeks due to the holidays.

I want to express my sympathies to Paul Neves on the loss of his father. Paul is one of the nicest people I heave ever met and this year has not been good for him and his family.

2010 day of steel on steel and rubber on dirt

I am planning a day trip in 2010 to the land of helmets. A ride up through Ct. on route 32, to Palmer Mass and the Steaming Tender Restaurant for lunch,

(by the way, for an appetizer might I suggest "The Fiery Volcano" ,a stack of thickly battered onion rings, surrounded by a plateau of breaded jalepeno slices, topped with a zestful Creamy Ranch sauce.),

After lunch , a hop back to West Warren for the Quaboag Riders MC hillclimb competition.

Followed by a ride back on roads less travelled, Hopefully I won't get lost this time.

The trip will be on a Saturday or Sunday depending on the QRMC schedule, (not available yet).
So if you're interested, stay tuned, when I get the dates available I will publish them here, and bring it up at a meeting.

What's new, Well, the State of Connecticut is at it again...

Yes once again this loverly state we live in has figured out another way to take the earnings out of your pocket. But it only counts if you smoke and if you buy ciggarettes on-line,

The State of Connecticut is currently contacting the On-line sources of ciggarettes and having them provide customer/contact lists for those of us that purchase coffin nails on line. Those persons will then be sent a tax bill in the mail for whatever they bought.

Thursday night,

Four members of the Club had a night of their own, including Fillet Mignon, Scallops, New York Strips and a few drinks at the Steak Loft before heading for the Harp And Hound. A "Good" time was had by all, the girls got thier "Guinness Perfect Pint" pouring certificate. Only problem was while they got to play at pouring, and the Guiness was free, we had to drink that mud. Hope the members at the meeting had half as good a night, but I rather doubt it.

And oh yeah...

From the Side lines

Reuben and I shot video at Last nights Montville Light Parade and I have to say it was the darkest light parade I have ever seen. I was rather surprised that there were so many people walking who were completely dark. Even the vehicles in the parade were rather dimly lit. This was definitely brought to everyone’s attention by the contrast of the New London Motorcycle Club. All along the parades route you could hear people exclaiming about the motorcycles coming. When the Club arrived at each area and began the drill team maneuvers with the fully dressed bikes there was nothing but applause and excitement. It is safe to say the Club stole the show...as a matter of fact...the Club was the show. Good job to all those involved, drill team and following riders. The bikes looked great.

What are you doing next year?

From the President

We are going to start planning for six away trips for 2010. Laconia Bike Week, Lake Placid and Cape Cod will need to be booked early to assure everyone has lodging. We already have our eye of four facilities out of the six trips.

Friday, June 4th - Sunday, June 6th: Milton, PA

Monday, June 14th - Wednesday, June 16th: Laconia Bike Week, Weirs Beach, NH

Friday, June 25th - Sunday, June 27th: Cape Cod, MA

Friday, July 16th - Sunday, July 18th: Lake Placid, NY

Friday, July 30th - Sunday, August 1st: White Mountains, Lincoln, NH

Friday, September 17th - Sunday, September 19th: Rockport, MA

We are looking for those of you who have a STRONG interest in participating in one or all of these six trips. Please respond with the trips that interest you. This is not a commitment at this time on your behalf, this is just to give me an idea on how many maybe going where. So if there is a couple going, respond 2 going to (insert trip). I would love to see all of you make all the trips, but I know that will not happen. Hopefully you can make some of them. As soon as I get a tentative roster, I will start calling lodging facilities looking for the best deals we can get. This takes a lot of time and effort, so I would like to get started early, so I can get all of it done. I will attempt to get blocks of rooms as close to each other as possible.

You can either e-mail myself or to Jason (jay7622@hotmail.com) with your response. Jason will be keeping track a running excel worksheet with everyone's names on it.

Get to know your new VP

Dan Dunn is Manager with New England Financial Group LLC , Wears a suit 5 days a week but is only comfortable when he’s dressed to ride. Born 50 years ago this month he has been a member of the Club since May of 2007. His first bike was a Yamaha Star Motorcycle, a VSTAR 1100, and oddly enough it is his current bike. Dan bought his bike in March of 2007 and rode with his brother in law, Mark, who also has a Vstar. When Mark had an accident and shattered his leg Dan found himself riding alone. He picked up a copy of the Montville Times and saw an article about the New London Motorcycle Club and their recent Poker Run. The article contained contact information of one Jim Moran, Dan immediately contacted him and the rest as they say is history.

I believe you will find Dan to be a good VP and energetic to the cause, as we saw in his performance as Recruiter he gets involved and stays there. Like Dan says, you have a question, a suggestion, or a problem don’t hesitate to contact him.

Who says that Romance ends at Marriage

Meet your lifes dream.

You may be asking yourself, "When does mark have the time to cut and paste motorcycles, draw pictures, post photos and articles on the blog, put together slide shows and movies, and all the other stuff he does?"It's simple, I do it at work. I also run two parts departments and still find time to cook spaghetti and meatball diners, barbeque chicken and pork, serve spiral ham and egg breakfasts, all at work. Hell, I even find time to take a nap or two during the day.(usually not planned, I just sit down at my desk and fall asleep), And How is this possible? It's possible because THIS IS AMERICA!!!, where a child can grow up to be president. You can do anything you want, and be anything you want in this country because this country is GREAT!!! I couldn't do all this if I lived anywhere else. Cooking, napping and playing on a computer isn't easy, you have to aspire to it. sleeping and eating at work is what I live for. Other kids I grew up with wanted to be Astronauts, Cowboys, race car drivers, Not me, I wanted to be lazy and I am, I wanted to be left alone and I am. So dare to dream, work hard at what you truly want to do and truly want to be and it can come true for you as well,.

Looky,,,Visual Aids

When I first joined the club and took my first few "Club Rides" I was totally clueless. Tom would say,"We'll be lining up bar to bar , turning right and heading up the road. "BAR to BAR", What the heck does that mean? Being stupid even when I was told what it meant it was still a little vague. "All the bikes line up side by side, handle bar to handle bar".  Oh... O/k...that makes sense, Then what? Nobody ever splains that part. You sort of have to watch and see what everyone else does. Unfortunately riding near the rear, What I noticed is that no one seemed to do the same thing twice, some of the first out onto the road would pull out and head for the shoulder while others went to the center line. What this taught me was that nobody behind the road guards seemed to know what to do once they hit the street, they all just headed for a hole in the formation. Quite often there would be more bikes on one side of the road so people would jockey for position.

So after asking further and learning the correct way, I found that it works good and looks good. Problem is, when your new you just don't know, and some people who don't know seem to be afraid to ask and look dumb. Asking does not make you look dumb. Bad formations, and swapping back and forth make you look dumb. So...

Here are some pix that may help...

1). All bike should line up side by side forming two rows.

2). On the road Captains movement all bikes should move forward...The first row heading out to the line to make their turn...

3). As the first row starts tuning on the line the second row should be arriving at the edge of the road. At this point they make the turn sticking to the outside edge of the road.

4). This should bring all bikes onto the road in a side by side pattern. At this point the bikes should go into a staggered formation.

Staggered Formation Why???
I'm Glad you asked...

What about Honor Guard formation?
Why do we do it?
Is it a safe riding formation?

More good questions,,, and I'll answer them for you.
Why do we do it, we do it because it looks good, more uniform, and we usually only do it for special occasions, funerals. parades, etc.
Is it as safe as staggered formation...in a word no. Side by side riding does not leave as many escape and evasion routes as staggered. But since most Honor Guard missions require slow driving the risk is minimal.

I hope this helps, and I must say you ask some good questions

Warmer weather

I love warmer weather, If its 50 out then warmer would be 60 and that would be good, if it were 40 out, 50 would be good. It's all relative. the colder it gets the more warmer is better. I love summer, those 80 and 90 degree days, I even like humidity, you know the type, you step out the door and instantly feel like someone has wrapped you in Saran wrap. You can ride all day and all night. And the smells, from pine forests to the smell of fallen leaves, the sweet smells eminating from ponds and swamps smells filled with life, flowers, algae, cut grass. All the things that make summer summer. This year we didn't have many hot humid days and its a shame. We go into the colder weather with little to remind us of the warmer seasons. Where we should have had heat and humidity we had warm and rain. But still those days were good. Days filled with riding, riding with freinds. I enclose a few of the New Hampshire trip photos to remind us of what we had and what we have to look forward to again next year.

On June 26th the Club decided to take a short hop up to New Hampshire So we loaded our bikes and off we went. There were three plans,

a).The Moran plan : Stay at The Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, enjoy the pool, spa, plazma screens and all the Amenities.

b), The Mudget Plan, Stay at Genes house outside of Laconia, relax and cruise the roads.

c), The Lorett Plan: Camp out under the stars, in the rain, on rocks and twigs, The Cowboy way.

My bike, packed for the trip, Stowaway to be evicted before departure.

First fuel stop, Massachusetts

The Ride enters New Hampshire

Lunch stop in Tilton New Hampshire

Someone decided it would be warmer if we all  put on our rain gear to get the sauna effect, it sure as hell wasn't because of any rain that fell.
We won't tell Dana that the poncho thing won't work
Orange is not my color, leather underneath adds a nice heat layer

I volunteered for the Mudget plan so arriving at Genes we were met by a road mower unit. I still think our "Recruiter" should have given him a card, he was on two wheels after all

The crew is parked and ready to roll, supply purchasing and cruising the back roads like nuts.

The road between the house and Weirs Beach is fantastic with hills, curves and lakes, truthfully, even if Weirs Beach were a total waste of time the ride was worth it.
But Weirs Beach is cool, in a 1970s throwback kind of way.

Gene's is a ways from anything, peaceful and quiet, with a chance of moose or bear wandering around the back yard. So...with so much available to do after the sun goes down...drinking seems to be the best thing to do.
And of course who can drink without goofy flashing glasses?

The morning of the 27th

Hows this for a sunrise? And plenty of room for anyone wanting to sleep on the ground

Plenty of room in the shed, unless you brought a cover, I mean why carry it if you're not going to use it?

Breakfast

Getting ready for the ride north to Lincoln to meet up with the rest of the Club,The day started with an early wakeup, load up, and head to Lincoln. The back roads winding through Lake country before we got to rte 93 were gorgeous for cruising. And having a Black bear run across the highway in front of you is worth the whole road trip alone.

After meeting up in Lincoln the plan was to run the "Kank" then the club would split up, one group to run through Crawford Notch, the other to Climb Mount Washington. (Agiocochook, or "home of the Great Spirit")
I stuck with the "Mudget bunch" and we opted for the Moran tour of the Crawford Notch.
Below are some shots of the Club on the "Kanc" (Kancamagus Highway)

The Mount Washington "Lorett Plan" crew breaks off at North Conway

Cruising north through Crawford Notch the Native American Gods decided that the "WASICU" should stay out of the hills and dropped gallons of water on the Club to dampen their spirits.

Well it worked to a point, while the main body continued through the Notch a small group headed back to North Conway and sunshine.

Over the next couple days the Club would romp around the Hills of New Hampshire and Maine. The Maine run was a visit to a Wolf Preserve run by Rick's Brother.

So while Winter approaches and deepens, and the doldrums set in, everytime you look at your bike and dream... Dream of days like these.
