It's funny how things come around

They made a Movie with Jack Lemmon, Doris Day, and Ernie Kovacs called "It happened to Jane". It is supposed to take place in Maine, but was filmed in Deep River, Chester and Plainfield Ct. The movie centers around a woman in the Lobster business who shipped a load of lobster by the Eastern and Portland Railroad (played by the New Haven Railroad), and instead of the delivery being made it came back...lobsters dead. She goes to war with the railroad and seizes a train. The engine used in the movie was the last surviving Steam engine belonging to the New Haven Railroad. After the movie was filmed the town of Deep River was offered the engine because the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad was going to scrap it. The town refused it and it went to scrap. Today there are no surviving New Haven Steam engines in existence.  Now why is it funny how things come around.

Deep River is one of the towns the Valley Railroad in Essex Ct. runs through, using steam engines from places like the Aberdeen and Rockfish. It is a shame no one came forward and saved one engine. If the town had taken the unit even as a static display it could have been saved, rebuilt and be running today on rails once owned by it's company.
