Mathewson Mill road

This is a great road to ride, it has hills, twists and corners, the only major drawback is that it is fairly short.  The road goes from rte 2 in Preston to and intersection with Thomas, Church Hill, and Fanning roads in Ledyard.

Now that I told you it is a pretty good road I am going to tell you to stay off it.

Now I'll tell you why, if you come in from Route 2, you will crest the small hill after the Pizza Parlor and find that the road has about 2 inches of gravel on it. The Town has oiled the road, and cars have been making some grooves and berms in the gravel, on some corners you will find ridges of loose gravel up to 3 and 4 inches thick. If you are coming in from Ledyard you will be cruising along fine, swing through a down hill left/ up hill right and you will hit the gravel.

I can say that the town did put up a gravel warning sign, it says "Loose Gravel 15mph" the sign is halfway through the graveled area, I have a hunch you'll figure out about the gravel long before you see any sign.
