This is the original posting for the ride

Jack had often said that he'd like to ride Saddle Sore 1000's in each of the 50 states, and he was well on his way to accomplishing that goal when his life was cut short by a heart attack. In his honor and memory, a select group of us will be able to memorialize Jack's dream by riding in-state SS1k's in each of the 50 states on one day. Suggested dates are October 15 or October 22. Those days should present decent weather--not too hot and not too cold.

The IBA will issue a very special certificate for this ride at a discounted price of $22 (certification only program). All IBA rules will apply as to documentation and, if the ride is circuitous (like it must be in some of the eastern states) special witness rules may apply

Jack was a friend and, at least to me, a hero. He was truly a LD rider. He completed countless IBA events. Let's add this event to his legacy.

I will be the IBA point person on this historic series of rides. If you would like to participate in this event, please let me know (off list) what date would be best (if you can do either please say so) and what state you would like to ride in. If you would be willing to ride in any one of several states, please let me know that, since I'm certain there will be some states without firm volunteers.

PATCHES
Due to the overwhelming support fort this ride, an embroidered patch will be designed and provided without additional charge for those riders who certify their ride. This will be a neat patch to have!

Madawaska Four Corners Park
A memorial ‘brick paver’ with Jack’s name will be placed in this Four Corners Park

Will there be anything else happening on October 15?
A United States flag will be flown over the U.S. Capitol on October 15 to commemorate this ride in memory of Jack, and a certificate will be issued by the Architect of the Capitol. The flag and certificate will be presented to Jack’s son and daughter.

What else?
We will be producing a video of the spotwalla location page for this ride. It will show all the riders who logged into the spotwalla page as the ride progresses—this will be really neat!
If you haven’t already done so, please register here for the spotwalla page.
The video will also include some still shots or riders and their bikes. Please take a few pictures as you ride your state. Be sure to have at least one picture that shows you and/or your motorcycle with a sign that has the state name in it. A post office will work, or a building with an address including the state name would also be fine. This is for the video and is not a requirement for the certification of the ride.

Can I ride a Bun Burner or Bun Burner Gold instead of a Saddle Sore?
Absolutely! You can apply for both a certificate for the in-state jack Shoalmire Tribute Ride and a certificate for the BB or BBG. Just be sure you have properly documented both rides. Remember, the Saddle Sore portion must be in-state.

Can I recruit additional riders to make the ride with me?
Sure! Please let Howard know their names and email addresses so we can put them on our email list for updates. This ride is open to IBA members and non-members. Finishers who are not IBA members will be eligible to join the IBA as a result of completing this ride.

If I ride from the state where I live to the state in which I’m riding, can I include those miles as part of the 1,000 miles?
The entire Saddle Sore ride must be within the state in order for an in-state certification. So, if you ride 100 miles from your home to the other state’s borders, you can not count that 100 miles as part of the Saddle Sore ride. Get a gas receipt as you enter the state, and continue from there to execute the ride entirely within the state.

My plan is to ride 1,005 miles. Is this route okay?
It’s a good idea to plan to ride at least 1,030 miles on Mapquest or Google maps. When the auditors check your documentation, their software might have slightly different mileages, so rather than getting into a heated discussion after-the-fact, it’s better to ride the few extra miles to provide a cushion. Remember, your odometer is not very accurate, so don’t trust your odometer for the mileage. Check out your route on one of the GPS programs, and/or Mapquest or Google.

What are the documentation requirements for this ride?
The ‘usual’ IBA requirements apply, except that all riding must be within the state. If there are two routes that can be take, one in-state and one that goes out of state for a few miles, you must document that you stayed within the state. If you have any questions about your route, please contact the ride coordinator.
IBA rules and the rules on documentation for this ride are at the link below.

What is the date and time for the ride?
The date of the ride is October 15, 2011. Each rider will be riding an individual ride. You may start the ride at any time so long as part of the ride is on October 15. Please let the ride coordinator know if you are going to start or finish the ride on a date other than October 15.
Can we ride as a group?
Of course, but remember, each rider must document his/her own ride as if the ride was an individual ride. Also remember that members of the group can’t act as witnesses for each other. But all of the riders can use the same witnesses.
Do we have go get approval on our route?
No, unless your route is going to be a small circuit that must be ridden many times over. See the rules referenced above. Most rides will be easy to document with gas receipts at the corners and ends of roads. If there is any concern over your route or documentation, contact the ride coordinator.
How about SPOT satellite transponders?
We will have a ‘location page’ that will show the location of all riders at any time. If you have a SPOT, please sign up for the location page at
http://spotwalla.com/locationViewer.php?id=81
Step by step instructions for joining this location page are at
http://spotwalla.com/help/lps.php#join
ALSO, please send the ride coordinator the link to your own trip Spotwalla page for this ride (include the password link if you are password-protecting that page).
We will be producing a video of the event from the location page so please, if you own a SPOT, sign up.
If you don’t use a SPOT, a smart cell phone with built in GPS can also be used.
Any questions, contact the ride coordinator.
What else do you want?
Please email a picture of you and/or you and your bike to the ride coordinator. We’ll include the pictures in our video
