I was rather surprised at the light turn out for Gene Mudgett's last ride. Normally when this club loses a member just about every "active" member attends, out of respect for a brother or sister member. Usually for one of these solemn days, the front of the Clubhouse and most of the parking lot is full of motorcycles and cars. This was not the case on Saturday, we had a total of 18 motorcycles and maybe 6 cars, That was all. The Steward prepared the food for a normal "last ride" meal, with roughly 21 members in attendance and the few family members, there was a lot of food which went uneaten.
For myself and others, the loss of a member is a serious matter, I myself have been to a number of funerals for Club members, quite a few of which that I have never even seen the member before. One of our members who attended the Saturday service is in the process of physical Therapy after having surgery's, he arrived by car, He said, he "Could not, not attend".
We are not a 1% club, where a lack of attendance would mean the loss of your colors until you re-earned them, we are a family club and as such should be stronger. A Club where you go because you and your family are part of the Club family and as so, you go for that reason. Remember just because you didn't know someone, had never met someone and perhaps even never before heard that member's name, that member meant something to the Club and meant something to other members of the Club.
The reason for going is not that it pleases us to be there, the reason is that it shows the member's family and the Club family that the person was important to others also. You are there for them.
