No lowers, just ballistic leaves

Posted November 2, 2010

Street Glides do not come through with lowers. Lowers are those two aerodynamic painted to match column's mounted on the Harley ElectraGlide crashbars. The lowers keep the wind and rain off your legs and each one has a small storage area you can keep crap in. I would like them on the StreetGlide but the price is prohibitive, so what I did was place an order through J&P for the crash bar chaps. The Chaps (vinyl ones not leather, because I am cheap) wrap around the bars and keep the wind and rain off your calves and feet, your knees and thighs are still "In the Wind". I put them on before Sunday's ride and found they work really well anyway, from home to Montville I went Chapless and let the bar chaps do the work. Before mounting them I used to get to watch nature dance before my eyes, a leaf, a feather, or any other light debris would get sucked up off the road then start floating around between myself and the windshield, sometimes the object would hover there, other times it would travel up and down doing loops before drifting high enough to get out of the vortex and into the passing air which would grab it and take it away.
With the new chaps I get nothing coming up from the engine area, but... I do get leaves, just fewer, and from a new direction, the leaf gets caught up in the wind from the front of the bike, the bar chaps form a wall so the leaf goes straight up between the front of the gas tank, the fairing and the neck. You can hear it happen, a sharp high speed fluttering sound. You see the leaf isn't perfectly flat, so there's resistance as the leaf passes upward, it almost gets stuck, it's edges fluttering in the compressed air way, than all of a sudden it clears the passageway, the bottled up, pressurized air behind it blasts it out. Instead of a pretty, lively dancing leaf act I get a ballistic leaf, it blasts out of the opening and goes from the tank past my fore head in a milli-second. It rockets up past, occasionally trying to rip my skin off as it scrapes along the frontal lobe area of my head, it's rather cool, I'm waiting to see the axe version.
