Saturday nights winner

Not to worry though...

She said no matter how much she won it would never affect her...

But she does ask if all you little people would mind parking your bikes somewhere else, It's easier for the chauffeur if he has the front of the building.

Better two wheels than 4

We have a member who can handle his bike pretty damn well, he's one of the few people that can keep on Tom's rear fender when playing with the cones, and I'm talking about when Tom is trying to shake him. This member has become a road guard and can turn in the box without trying. In other words, he can handle two wheels.

It would appear 4 wheels is another story, he and a couple other people from work went to the Cart track in Wallingford, he had some good speeds. The problem came in one of the corners, It seems that temporarily he must have forgotten that a corner means turn. He made a discovery most people would rather avoid, the wall at the track is hard.

No permanent damage though, I have reports that there was no Thousand Island dressing on the ground so there was no bleeding involved, just a slammed shoulder. He did receive a warning from the track officials, they said, "Don't hit the wall".

klay

He told me he was trying different lines through the turns, I told him that one was probably the wrong line. I think he tried leaning instead of turning,

Fire Destroys motorcycle shop

LOUISVILLE, Ky.
A father and son spent Monday cleaning up after their longtime motorcycle shop went up in flames. The fire started Monday just before 5 a.m. at Cycle Works, in the 3300 block of Preston Highway.
It's been a hard day,” said Duane Anderson of Cycle Works.
In five words, Anderson described the end to more than 30 years of hard work that came out of the motorcycle shop.
“You break down crying. Everything you worked for is pretty much gone,” Anderson said.

The fire destroyed thousands of dollars worth of helmets and motorcycles.

“Me and my dad had just got done putting most of our inventory into that building and had planned on opening it up by March. So we lost pretty much everything we've got as far as inventory goes,” Anderson said.

Anderson and his dad, both with a passion for bikes, started their business in 1979.

Most recently they had begun remodeling part of the building, which once served as a hub cap store.

“I got a phone call about 5:30 from a concerned customer. She thought it was actually another building, then I turned on 32 news and found out it was our buildings,” Anderson said.

The Andersons said the only thing left for them to do now is regroup.

“It's been in the family too long to quit now. We struggle every winter. It's just a shame it came during this part of our year,” Anderson said.

Anderson said he's not sure what could have started the fire, but said he's had a couple of problems with homeless people living inside the building as recently as two nights ago.

He said he will likely look for a new location to rebuild.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to put out the fire. Fire officials are not sure yet what started the blaze.

Fire officials said oil and grease inside fed the flames.

There were no injuries

1 killed, 1 hurt in SD County motorcycle crash

The Associated Press

CHULA VISTA, Calif.—San Diego County authorities say a head-on crash between two motorcycles has killed a sailor and injured another man.

The county medical examiner's office says a 22-year-old sailor was riding in Otay Mesa Sunday morning when he tried to pass a group of motorcyclists by crossing into oncoming lanes and struck a Harley-Davidson head-on.

The sailor was pronounced dead at the scene. His name wasn't immediately released.
The other biker had arm and leg fractures. City News Service says he was flown to a hospital but there's no word on his condition Monday morning.

Lead Law

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is poised to vote on a staff recommendation to delay enforcement of parts of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, or "lead law," the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.
Specifically, the staff suggests that CPSC commissioners delay enforcing the testing and certification requirements for kids' dirtbikes and certain other products until Sept. 14. Currently there is a stay of enforcement that expires Feb. 10.

Harley-Davidson Inc. has unveiled a new Softail-based cruiser.
The Blackline bike features back-to-basics styling, a new fuel tank and split-drag handlebars.

MILWAUKEE (January 21, 2011)

Lean as wire, hard as iron and dark as a tar road at midnight, the new Blackline motorcycle is a Harley-Davidson Softail model pared to the bone. A rebellious creation of the Dark Custom movement, the Blackline celebrates three fundamental elements of motorcycling: mechanical beauty, internal combustion, and the long black line of the road ahead.
The Blackline balances allegiance with rebellion, discarding previous conventions of color and chrome for a Dark Custom look that’s honest, functional and attainable. Visual elements of the original bobber movement are combined with the raw, hand-hewn style embraced by today’s young builders. The Blackline throws new fuel on a fire that burns across generations, an unquenchable desire to ride.

ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK — Dwight Asmus, an avid motorcycle rider, had always wanted an antique bike with a sidecar.

Three months after finally making the purchase, the 68-year-old Valley Center man was killed while riding the 1970 Moto Guzzi in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA.

Friends who were riding with Asmus Sunday morning said the crash occurred during a turn on eastbound Highway 78, when a wheel of the empty sidecar came off the ground. As he tried to maintain control and straighten out, he struck an oncoming Chevy pickup hauling a horse trailer, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

“It just got away from him,” said friend Merlin Bianco. “He was in control, there just wasn’t enough time to make it all happen and clear the trailer.”

Have you looked outside?
The snow is melting, the sun is shining,
it is almost warm, (in the sun)

I would close and head out at lunch for a cruise, except for the fact that the receiving bay at work is on the north side of the building.

There is no sun on the north side of the building...ever.

So...while the south, east and west parking lots are clear and smooth, the area outside my department is packed snow and ice for about 30 or so feet.

It usually stays that way into March.

klay

Always something

Used my new snow blower last night, (Single stage, two stroke, not self propelled) Did the back up area of the driveway, did in front of its home, the shed and did a walk through to the fire pit.

But there's always something, I dug the shed out to give the unit a place to sit out of the weather, problem is there is ice in front of the shed, its about three inches thick, two inches over the bottom of the door, so in order to get the toy in I have to clear the ice, chop down three inches and about five feet out for the door to swing.

It spent the night outside last night.

We had a Friend over last night, she mentioned that my drivers side window in the car looked too clean, so she reached in on a hunch and found it was wide open, she reminded me of it last night before she left, I was reminded again this morning, when I walked around a snow covered car and saw that the window was too clean.   Seat looked like the rest of the car though...

There's always something.

Thursday Report

Bill T. produced an excellent meal tonight for the Club, I pulled up out front, got out of the car and smiled, even outside...Garlic.

Bill made two different styles of Garlic Bread, (both great), Lasagna, Macaroni and cheese, a salad with tomatoes and greens and a home-made Vidalia onion dressing (sweet and fantastic) and a series of small baked items for dessert. The dinner started off slow with people trickling in,and there was enough food for people to have seconds or thirds.

At 7pm Jim decided to forgo a meeting and we just sat around, chewed the fat and drank coffee.

The reason the meeting was not held and the reason there was plenty of food was because YOU were not there! As a matter of fact a lot of "YOU"s were not there. I believe we had either 13 or 14 people total. We did think about voting in a bunch of stuff because there wouldn't be any opposition but...we were good.

Of note I want to say it was good to see Wolfie back in attendance after his ordeal.

The magic word today is "Raisin"

A desiccated grape, a plump juicy fruit that when picked at it's height of freshness can be turned into jelly, juice, or wine. When left on the vine turns into a shriveled tiny sweet chewy...raisin.

The raisin must be all powerful. Just about every cereal company out there produces a Raisin Bran cereal. I have never talked to anyone who does not like Raisin Bran, sure, some complain it has too many raisins, others that it has too few, but people like it.

The reason I say magical and all powerful is because I have had "All Bran" cereal. Have you? Anything, fruit or otherwise that can turn bran into an edible and enjoyable meal has to be all powerful and magical. If you have had "All Bran" you know what I am talking about.

If you have never tried "All Bran" cereal, then you may need a little introduction. All Bran is a course brown cereal that looks like you have a bowl full of twigs, and has the same consistency when you are chewing it. If you leave the pile of ground litter in the bowl with milk long enough, (to soften it to a edible degree), you end up with a brown paste...with grit. If you find yourself curious about "All Bran" and want to try it yourself but do not want to spend the money on an entire box...just wait...When Fair season hits, and you can go to any of them, (Hebron, Brooklyn, Lebanon, Ledyard, etc), walk into the livestock area, find the petting zoo, put a nickle in the machine and get a handful. I assure you, it's the same thing. As a matter of fact, my cereal box at home, has "GOAT FEED" written across it.

So far, no one has refuted the label.

An Epiphany

I usually wax lyrical about all the wonders, beauty, and grandeur of the warmer months, the warmth, the smells, the colors, and life. Everything from grasses, trees and leaves, to mosses and flowers, from birds to deer. The beauty of a shaded pine grove, to a waterfall cutting down through a forested ledge. But I believe my point of view may be bias, based on the fact that those are the months where being on a motorcycle rises above all else.
I was parked on the interstate this morning, ( a four wheel drive Jeep had found that 4 wheel drive helps you go, but doesn't help much in a slide, and parked in the revine), I was looking to the left and noticed the silent leafless trees, with Mountain Laurel lining a rock ledge revine with a stream flowing through it, all snow covered and the snow falling. Now, I always say I hate snow, it's cold, it's wet, and it has to be cleared away requiring exertion and causing pain, but today, the snow was surealistic, it looked like Hollywood Christmas movie snow, or...like sitting in a giant snow globe. It was actually beautiful. It shows the Lord has a way to make even one of the simplist of things , like frozen water, beautiful.

Of course..as beautiful as it was...I prefer 70-90 degrees and a motorcycle.

Last nights meeting

Last nights meeting started with dinner, Thibbs cooked up some Chili, (Venison and Elk), served it with cornbread, and wine. The chili was excellent, as far as I know everyone enjoyed it....

Well...maybe not everyone

We had a visit from "The Patch" Internet Newspaper, she interviewed the family asking our opinion on the new Law requiring persons wishing to get a motorcycle licence to take the State course.

The meeting kicked off on time, more or less, once the jokes and stories subsided. The meeting discussed items like the bike blessing, this weekends trips, (Bike show in New York City, Bike show in Springfield Mass.)

The Road Captain reported that the weather this weekend was to be crappy, so Sunday's A.O.B. will be at 10am. (Ass out of bed). Vinny Y. brought in another Harley sign for raffle, Bub announced the raffle for the rifle and 40cal pistol.

The meeting ended fairly early which lead into the normal war stories, last years Ground Zero ride taking top billing.
From there the meeting moved to DD in Montville, as usual for more talking.

All in all a most enjoyable night.

When

 When the snow is falling,
and the temperature does the same.
When the sky is grey,
and so are the trees,
When the grass is brown,
when it shows beneath the snow.
When the wind blows steady,
and drives the cold through your bones.

You walk out the door and your nose hairs freeze,
Your joints don't work and it's too cold to breath,

Remember...better times are coming.

Close your eyes and remember...
The warmth of the sun, and the cool of the shade,
the smell of the grass, the flowers and trees.
The dripping energy sapping humidity,
the sweat rolling in your eyes.
The bugs pelting you in the face.
The soft, hot, sticky tar.
All the wonderful things of summer we look forward to...

It will be here soon,
The snows will melt,
Things will grow,
the air will warm,
the birds will sing...
and we will ride.

Jeans and Tee shirts
the warm air whipping past you,
leaning into a corner or cracking the throttle on the highway,,

It will be here..
So when the winter gets you down...

Close your eyes,
remember the smells of rolling from a hot highway into a cool pine covered back road...
remember the heat soaking through your body...

Remember...
In the meantime, save this as your desktop, and when winter gets you down...stare at this picture...and remember....

Soon.

From the President

I know it is just the start of the year, but I am already considering rides and weekend destinations.

In addition to our traditional attendance at Pappy's Run, there is interest in attending Rolling Thunder this year in Washington D.C.. Some of our newer members have never been to RT. If you are interested please respond so I can start shopping. Last time we took 26 rooms. That is not an easy task to accomplish, particularly if you don't start early. So get back to me ASAP. This is not a commitment just a gauge. I'll be looking for rooms in the $ 75.00 - $ 100.00 category. Two nights lodging. We would leave on Saturday, returning on Monday, (Memorial Day)

We are also in the planning process of our Season Kick Off on April 17th, and we also have a construction project to start probably in March. We are also hosting a Rodeo possibly in July. I am also looking at Niagra Falls and Lake Morey, VT, for away trips

Last Saturday

First I have to say that because I worked Saturday, it mean't I had to go home after work and clear a driveway, there's nothing like standing out in the wind on a cold evening lifting a shovel full of snow, over and over again. Plus it turned out that for some reason the Town plow crew used my driveway as a end point in their plow run.

Why did I tell you that? Just so you know I didn't just blow off the New Haven County dinner. Now because I wasn't there I'll leave that guy who sits in the middle of the head table during the meetings to tell you the rest. (you know the guy, bangs a gavel too hard)

From the President

Last night, Sat. 01/08, we joined the New Haven County members for a dinner night out. Chairwoman Joanne Natale picked a great place, Eli's on the Hill, across from Brother's Harley Davidson on Rte 1 in Branford. The ambiance was nice and the food was outstanding. Roughly 25 members attended which was more than I expected due to the poor weather conditions. We had our own private room on the second floor and it was just a great evening. It was Drew Lombardi's birthday so of course we celebrated. It was a bit slippery and snowy going home but worth the trip.

If your County is planning something make sure I get it out to our membership. If I cannot attend please send me a report so I can forward it to our membership.

Jim

Here are a few photos of the evening thanks to Vinny P.

I learned a new trick to clearing a driveway...

All you need is a Fire in a neighbors house!!!

Finding a neighbor neighborly enough to have one for you may be rough.

Sunday morning, I woke up, shoveled around the car, drove to the store (out of cigarettes) then returned home to do the driveway and front walk. I walked in the house to get dressed for the weather when I heard a noise on the front Ramp. Opening the door I found my neighbor shoveling the ramp and walkway. Knowing my back is questionable he asked if I would mind his clearing the driveway for me. Mind?

I stepped back in the house as the Fire Department rescue truck passed by out front. 5 minutes later my neighbor walked in the backdoor and exclaimed he was finished shoveling, the driveway was clear. I asked him how could you clear a driveway in 5 minutes. He told me with a big smile.

He said, "If you look out the window you'll notice one of the other neighbors houses had a fire, (Chimney)." He had just started to shovel when one of the Fire department support vehicles arrived, the driver told him to get out of the way, they need to put a fire truck in there (my driveway), The Fireman then dropped the plow on the front of the vehicle and plowed the driveway and backup area. Job done. Damage to neighbors house minimal.

This led us to another discussion, there is another storm due in this Wednesday, (they're talking 12 inches), we're trying to figure out which neighbor needs to call the fire department then. He would like it to be closer to his house. (He has a long "U" shaped driveway.)

Rode from Dunkin Donuts to to drop the bike off and pick up the car for the ride home, and I noticed something, I was warmer on the bike than in the car. Leaving Montville on 32 I turned off the radio to listen to the music. The sound of the Screaming Eagle pipes purring along, it was a great if short ride. If it weren't for the forecast of snow in the morning I would have ridden home.
The air was cool and crisp, temperature about 28 degrees F. but the jacket and vest, gloves, chaps and fuzzy hat kept it comfortable. I pulled into work, pulled the bike in, parked it, shed the gear and got in the car for the ride home, and...froze

NLMC already started 2011 with an event.

19 Bikes 2 four wheelers and 25-30 members attended a fund raiser for the homeless by attending the New Year's Day Plunge, at Eastern Point Beach. Our Club supported 2 of our members, Dave and Doug Adams, and made donations. It was pretty cool pulling in the long driveway as people were clapping, shouting, and photographing us, as if we were Rock Stars pulling into the parking lot. There was about 300-400 in attendance. We watched the Adam boys take the plunge with 40 other brave souls, most of which were in their 20's and younger. What does that say about the Adam boys. Good time, and of course we headed for coffee before we separated. I usually have to work New Years Day, and this was the first time I rode my bike on January 1st in New England. Very Cool.

From the President

First day of 2011

Posted January 1, 2011

Well a new year rolled in last night, some of us didn't roll in with it, some came home around 4am, but we still had a good turnout for the ride today. The weather may have been a key factor in the amount of people we had. The meet was set for 10am at The Shack in Groton, riding around early I stopped at Norms for coffee to kill time, and arrived at The Shack at about 940am. Pulling in I found a large number of the riders were already there with a few already inside eating. The Shack was packed and took us in in groups of 6, seven of the riders decided to head to Norms instead and had breakfast there. When those of of us who ate at The Shack finished eating we headed to Paul's TV to park and wait for the Norman group to finish eating and come out and play.

Once everyone was together the riders headed for Eastern Point beach in Groton Ct. to watch the weird get wet. As the Club arrived it became "The Show" to watch, everyone stopped what they were doing to wether film, take pictures or watch, let's face it, Motorcycles are cool. We stood around a while watching the prospective bathers get ready for their dash into the sea. The run went off on time with two of our members joining the splash, two brothers, Adams, the third watched from the shore with us. (I guess insanity doesn't run in the entire family).

After the plunge we again got on the sleds and headed out, once again we were the show, with cameras clicking and people waving we rode out, some of us heading home others to Dunkin at the Five corners for coffee. After visiting for a while some of those left with seven of us heading up Thames street to I95, over the river to 32. With a stop for fuel in Montville taken care of we headed up 32 to Raymond Hill rd, then 163 to Bozrah, across to 87 and 87 to Lebanon to visit Rick. Going through Montville the temperature on the bank clocks read 60 degrees, 60 on New Years day, who would have thought. Proceeding north into Bozrah there was a distinct temperature drop, and visiting with Rick it continued to cool even more.

Leaving Ricks we had Road Sargent Hagar the Horrible (Dave A) lead, he took us across 207 into Sprague, then 97 down to 395 where we jumped on the highway for the ride home, people dropping off as we went with myself and Chris riding alone til the 32 connector where I headed to New London and he home.

All in all a great day to have the bike out. until leaving Dunkin I had been running without chaps and cutoff gloves. Just a glorious day to be alive on a motorcycle.

Two notes of interest, two of the members had new rides today, Sue D. has here brandy new black Harley, (Very Pretty, both of them) and Dana had a new ride today (Not so pretty, can't take that boy anywhere)

The Thursday meeting...

Posted December 30, 2010

Thursday's meeting abridged version,

I started a fire, Murph and Vinny arrived added wood to the fire, the Adams arrived and added more wood, more people began showing up, Jim showed everyone how to get the fire burning better by agitating it, Tom came with a dog in a dress (I will say no more on this), Sierra was there, The meeting was started, Pres talked, Dan talked, Dana talked, no Treasurer, no Road Captain, no Honor guard Captain, The county chairs had nothing to say, So Vinny made something up. Tom told us about Saturday's plan, was informed of a change in plan, stopped talking about Saturday's plan. There was something said about the Blessing, something about permits, something about talking about it later, no New or Old business, good of the Club...a reminder about the Branford County get together, a motion, a second...Dunkin Donuts.

did I forget anything?

Saturday's Plan...

Posted December 30, 2010

Wake up bright and early, let's say around 9am... put on your sunglasses....crawl out to your bike, start it up....get on it and ride to The Shack to meet the Club at 10am. At the Shack you can have breakfast with the rest of us, if you can have breakfast after all the booze you processed the night before.
From the Shack we will be riding to Eastern Point beach (Groton), to stand outside in the wind to watch a bunch of bikini clad women (and as someone at the club said, "and bikini clad men, unfortunately"), run into the Long Island Sound, then run back out.

From there we usually head to DD at the five corners in Groton for coffee before heading off on our own way.

Bring money...you have to pay for breakfast if you want to eat, the bound in the sound is a benefit to help the homeless so if you wish to help, bring more money, and if you want coffee at DD you will need more. The weather is suppose to be toasty warm in the 40s, so there should be no difficulty in riding.

The Shack
(Lighthouse Square), There is no Lighthouse there, there is no water there. So no need for a lighthouse there.
441 Long Hill Road
Groton, CT 06340-4149
(860) 445-5500

if you need more directions you can visit their website The Shack, if you click on the "find us" tab you will find out how to get to their East Lyme Ct. site, and their Waterford Ct. site, neither will help you because as I said we will be meeting at the Groton location, which, the website leaves to you to figure out.
