A hand grenade delivered in a coffee cup led to the evacuation of the city hall annex at 999 Broad St. around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Police said an unknown man approached someone outside the building and asked him to deliver a package to the Office of Internal Affairs. The suspect stated that the item was expected and the man obliged, bringing what appeared to be a cup of coffee with a lid into the building, Bridgeport police spokesman William Kaempffer said.
Investigators discovered that the cup actually contained what appeared to be a hand grenade, said Kaempffer.
The state police bomb squad was called in and removed the item, Kaempffer said.
The Bridgeport Detective Bureau is investigating the scene to collect evidence and interview witnesses who might help identity the unknown man, said Kaempffer.
"We are actively investigating this as a criminal act," said Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr.
Approximately 250 employees were evacuated and Broad Street was closed in the area as authorities investigated.
