Most of us are aware of the dangers of riding in cold weather,
but this article gives a good and to the point refresher. You may want to take
a look before preparing for this Sunday’s ride.
Something the article doesn't discuss is the fact that once you've lost body heat, adding layers of clothing won't be as effective as they would have been if you had worn them from the start and prevented that heat loss.
Nobody likes riding around feeling like the Pillsbury Dough-Boy, but unless you have heated gear, it's the next best thing to not riding at all.
And although the article talks about wind-chill, it does not mention the fact that riding non-stop keeps you in the wind; while stopping occasionally or making shorter runs helps your body to regain some of it's heat. This is especially true for your extremities.
As always, the bottom-line is safety. Think ahead, dress properly, ride defensively and a little cold-weather riding can wipe those Winter Blues away.
