The Connecticut River Valley at one time was "the" place to buy cigar tobacco. Connecticut Broad Leaf is a very old cigar type which was introduced prior to the 1880's, it is believed to have developed from the Maryland Broad leaf. The Connecticut leaf is a very large leaf and was good for the binders, fillers, and wrapper.(sort of an all in one leaf) Yes...for the best...you wanted Connecticut Broad Leaf. Experiments in Windsor, CT had proven that it was possible to grow Cuban tobacco
in Connecticut by reproducing the tropical climate of Cuba and Sumatra
artificially. This was done by enclosing the tobacco field in a "tent" of very
loosely woven cloth.
Several of these "shade grown" plantations were successful enough to survive
until the early 1970's when the market for this once important crop declined
dramatically.
While there are still some tobacco farms working the Valley most have gone away. Many of the tobacco sheds have been torn down, fell into ruin, or gone on to other uses. The industry in Connecticut is still working but it is greatly reduced from what it once was
Now...Here's my plan. With States making the use of Cannabis legal, (whether Connecticut does or not) the State should take the opportunity to create jobs, put these old sheds back in use and become the Greatest Weed producing State of them all!!! The South America of North America!!!
