The Northern Contingent headed out of Flanders at 8:30 am on Saturday, got on Rt I-95 South, we made a stop in Branford to pick up more riders then jumped back on I-95 to Stamford, Ct. In Stamford we got gas and more riders and then the fun started. We had 30 bikes and from the front it was nice to see all of the head lights trailing off in the distance. We could only go about 120 to 140 miles though stopping for gas all the way down.
I don't have the routes we took going down so you'll need to get them from Tom L.
When we made one of the gas stops somebody riding "his" Harley didn't know that when the gas pump shuts off, you then have to raise the nozzle out some and continue to fill the tank until you see the gas and then stop, so his tank was only half full, BUT, you don't want to do what I did and that was to fill the tank until it over flows.(WHAT A MESS)
We hit a rain shower near Harrisburg Pennsylvania and I heard a lot of talk over my CB about rain gear (fair weather riders ) but Tom said that we are going to ride through the shower and we did. We arrived at the Motel at 5:40 p.m on Saturday and to our surprise there was cold beer and snacks waiting for us thanks to Jim Scarritt and his wife, who came up from Tennessee while his bike was trailered down from Connecticut by Craig Knutson.
We all check in and after a quick shower we decided to get something to eat,so we went to a wings bar down the road. I guess the first thing that we should have noticed was there was nobody in the parking lot, there was nobody in the restaurant either, but we went in anyway and took over the place. The waiter came over took our drink orders while we sat around talking. After about twenty to twenty five minutes we still had no drinks, almost all of us got up and left. We got back on the bikes and went to a Denny's and had good service and ate good food.
On the way back to the Motel we got gas so we would be ready in the morning then had some drinks pool-side.
The next morning we went back to Denny's for breakfast and had an AOB for 9:00 am to head to Washington DC (maybe a thirty minute ride). On the way we had a lot of fun getting lost, making a lot of U-turns. Seeing where we wanted to go but not how to get there really frustrated Tom ( CB worked Good- F Bombs). Tom asked people for directions and still we were going in circles. After this went on for some time Craig let Tom know that Ginny (on her new trike) knew how to get us to the Pentagon because she lived in DC for three years (thank God).
We got to the Pentagon after a hour and half only to find that we were in the fourth parking lot on the south side and knew that we had to wait a long time to leave. Rolling Thunder started at 12:30 and we did not move out of the parking lot until 2:45 ,all but one (Steve Murphy got a flat tire). The Rolling Thunder event was well worth the wait. After the run we all met up at a park and had two hours to do what we wanted, so we walked around, shopped, saw the monuments, and then met back at the bikes and headed out of DC knowing that Steve had his bike towed back to the Motel.
On the way back we decided to stop to get something to eat however this is where in got ugly. Jason almost got taken out by a car ( not his fault) and we took a wrong turn again. We pulled off to the side of the road,Tom went and blocked one side of the road and Steve D went to block the other side but before he got in position, One of the riders started his U-turn and every body else did the same, but three cars where coming and luckily the cars stopped ( A CLUSTER ******)
Also on the way to eat a group got separated and I heard it was not fun, but we all did get to the restaurant and had a great dinner then fueled up on the way back to the motel.
When we got back to the motel we had a Club meeting pool-side to talk about that last U-turn and from that went on to talk about a lot of things (Good Meeting ). Afterwards some of us stayed up and had some drinks ( a lot of them) and at 2:30 am went to bed.
The first group of riders was suppose to leave at 6:15 am but the leader of the group was one of us that went to bed at 2:30am,so I think that group left at 6:45 am.The rest of the club left at 9:00 am and took Rt 95 North. After about an hour on the road we stopped to get something to eat and gas up.We had a nice stop and we were getting ready to start our bikes when one of the Ladys thought that she left her key in the ladies bathroom so she went back in to look. About fifteen minutes later she came out with no keys Why was that, because she forgot to check the ignition on the bike and that was where the key was.
We got back on 95 North and were making good time in the heat (About 97), then somewhere in New Jersey, Chris, who was riding OLD RED, said he had to pullover because it fell like the tire was going flat. It turned out it was not the tire so Tom did some checking and after standing on the side of the I 95 in the HEAT with traffic slowing to a crawl around us, (probably had something to due with a guy laying on the ground with a bunch of parked motorcycles around him), we loaded OLD RED into Jim S's. truck (Thank god he was following us home).
Once back on our way, we went with Chris and Donna (Now in a nice A/C truck with OLD RED going for the ride home).
We started to lose members as we were going north on I-95, myself ,Rich W, and Steve M. stopped by Tom's house to get OLD RED out of the truck. We had some pizza and soda and some laughs and I got home to my wife at 8:45 pm on Monday night after having a great time and putting some miles on my Bike.
Not only am I finished, I'm
