Sunday Ride AOB 10 AM Montville Dunkin Donuts

While I have not received any word on an “Official Club Ride” tomorrow; weather.com forecasts a cloudy day with an 80-90% chance of NO Rain, and a high of 45 degrees. Expected temperature at 10 AM is 42 degrees.

I’ll be at Dunkin Donuts in Montville for a 10 AM A.O.B., destination to be determined. I hope to see you there!

Only 23 More Needed for "Why We Ride"

WHY WE RIDE - EVERYONE HAS A REASON - WHAT'S YOURS?

When I originally created a post about the possible Sunday, December 8th, Plainville, CT showing of this film they only had 33 tickets sold and needed 72 more.

I’m happy to report that number is now 82 tickets sold and only 23 more needed for this to happen. That’s 49 tickets sold in 2 days. It looks very promising at this point.

THANK YOU to all those who will be joining us to see this film.

For those of you who are still considering joining us, here is the link to reserve your ticket: http://www.tugg.com/events/6830

I know it will be a long day for those attending the Montville Holiday Parade afterwards, but I think it will be very rewarding to support our drill team and brother members in the parade. I hope that I can count on you to make that effort.

The parade starts at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen (53 Norwich-New London Tpke-Rt. 32) at 5:00 PM. So we should have about an hour and a half to get there. Plainville is about an hour away, so it may be possible to participate in the parade. Keep in mind that the police will close down Rt. 32 at 4:30 PM, so you'll want to plan for a back-road approach to the staging area.

Sunday Ride .......................... In Port Charlotte, Florida

Umm, if anyone wants to ride with us, show up at 10 at the Hess Station at RT 41 and Palmer ave....Click Here for a Map

Craig:)
At my age, rolling out of bed in the morning is easy....Getting up off the floor is another story..

Sunday's forecast is for partly cloudy skies, no chance of rain and a high of 80 degrees. I think Craig might have the right idea migrating South for the Winter!

Moving Day

From the President

Krystle is with child and needs help moving some boxes and furniture out of her apartment to a storage location. Basically from the apartment to an elevator down to the first floor and out to a truck. Noon, Saturday, November 30th, at 43 Granite Street in New London. See trailering message.

Jim,
Our address is 43 Granite Street, New London, CT. It is a secure building so we would have to let the helpers in. Lance’s number is 479-619-9068 if anyone wants to txt or call him about anything such as a different time. We were thinking 12 Noon on the 30th of November would be the best time.

Thank you, Krystle and Lance Ellington

Parade Practice Sunday

FROM THE DRILL TEAM COORDINATOR – (a.k.a. The Road Captain)

We have two parades to ride next weekend. I would like to practice this Sunday if possible. I am thinking around 11 AM. Meet at Flanders McDonalds; this way if you’re early you can sit in the warm and have a cup. I plan on riding at the airport road as always.

We can choose a place for lunch after. I have a plan for John Cherrick and Danny to do a routine together and we need to see if they can work it out.

We still have lighting to do on the bikes and we seem to have 1 extra rider over the 6 up front. We have to look to work in Tom Y. and we will.

Turkey Day Thursday

I hope all my fellow club members have a
Happy Thanksgiving.

And while some of us might prefer to be with their NLMC family than their blood relatives, there is no meeting this week.

I doubt that there will be an “Official Club Ride” this Sunday; however, if the weather cooperates, there is a good chance that someone will be at Dunkin Donuts on Rt.32 in Uncasville at 10 AM. I’ll post here again if I get more solid information to that effect.

Why We Ride the movie - Reserve YOUR Tickets Now

Speaking of motorcycle flicks, a new one Why We Ride is just out at selected theaters. It appears to be a very interesting movie covering all aspects of motorcycle culture and I’m eager to see it. I think it will become the On Any Sunday of our time. (I have a copy of On Any Sunday, as well as Faster, for my proposed film festival too).

Take a look at the trailer for Why We Ride on youtube.com:

Their webpage:

Their Facebook Page:

This is a low-budget film whose distribution to theaters is being controlled by motorcycle enthusiast demand. THAT’S YOU AND ME. If we don’t go to see this film, nobody will. And I mean that in the literal sense. Because if they don’t get enough seats “Pre-Registered” the film won’t play at that theater.

One of us enthusiasts in Plainville has arranged for it to be shown at the AMC Lowes Plainville 20 & IMAX theater, 220 New Britian Ave., Plainville, CT on Sunday, December 8th at 2:00 PM.

The film is only about one and half hours long, so I think we will get out in plenty of time to get to the parade in Montville that evening.

We could get out to Plainville for Noon and eat lunch before the movie. The theater is in a shopping center with an Applebee’s and a number of other eateries to choose from. I’ll work on narrowing that down.

If we're really lucky and it is a nice day, it would be really cool to ride to the event. If not, we can carpool.

Follow this link for a map of the theater location:

Follow this link to reserve your tickets, they're only $11 each:

As of right now they have 33 tickets sold (including the two I bought) but they need 72 more before the event is scheduled to take place. That’s only 8 days away.

So please take a look and seriously consider joining me at what I think will be a really good time.

5 Must Watch Motorcycle Adventure Films

Follow this link to Youmotorcycle.com to read their reasons for picking the following movies and see the movie trailers.
  • The Long Way Round - Two actors (and their film crew) travel from London to NYC going East. I have this one, as well as The Long Way Down where they travel from John O'Groats, Scotland to Capetown, South Africa. I must have watched both a dozen times. The production quality is top notch. After watching these, you'll want to start planning your next long trip.
  • The Motorcycle Diaries - I have this one also. Not too much about motorcycles, but a good "buddy adventure" story about Che Guevara, the revolutionary who ended up fighting with Castro in Cuba.
  • Riding Solo to the Top of the World - An Indian riding a Royal Enfield AND filming himself as he rides from Mumbai to the Changthang Plateau in India. I have this one also, really amazing camera work considering he is doing it all himself. It is quite the adventure.
  • Mondo Enduro - A round the world adventure to travel the longest distance in the shortest time. I haven't seen this one yet and the link on youmotorcycle.com to youtube.com states that it is not available in this country. I went onto youtube.com and did a quick search and could not find anything on it. The DVD is available from White Horse Press for about $30.
  • Cycles South - Three guys hop on their bikes and head south, allowing fate to determine where they end up. This one is from the 70's. I've seen the first part of this one but it didn't hold my attention. I think it had been available from Netflix, but I can't find it now.
I also have a DVD on Isle of Man TT race and Horizon's Unlimited's Achievable Dream: Part One - Get Ready about how you can travel around the world on a motorcycle.

I understand that we have a TV and possibly a DVD player at the clubhouse.

I'd like to know if any club members are interested in getting together on a Saturday or Sunday during the off season, when the weather is not conducive to riding, to watch some of these films.

Please comment on this post or send me an e-mail: serpae@sbcglobal.net.

Sunday Ride: To Be or Not To Be?

From The Road Captain

Due to the weather forecast there is no ride scheduled for tomorrow.

However this is New England and knowing how things may improve, if you ride to Dunkin Donuts for a Noon AOB, you may find someone else there with whom to ride. Right now the weather report is for mostly sunny with wind and high of 30 degrees.

As Tom said at Thursday’s meeting: If you go, plan a short ride of about 18 miles, because most riders will not last longer than that when the high temperature for the day is supposed to be 30 degrees.

Also; make the majority of those miles before you get to your destination because even after you’ve warmed up again, you’ll only have tolerance for about another 4 miles in the cold.

Die Hard Riders Unite!

Dave isn’t giving up easily! Anyone who wants to ride before dinner, AOB will be 5:00pm at DD in Uncasville.

Mainly numbered roads as it’s after dark, but should be fun. Dress Warm!! Weather report calls for about 40 degrees and overcast, but NO chance of precipitation.

No Insurance....No Ride in Parade

Just a reminder; if you intend to ride in the Groton Holiday Lights Parade on Saturday, December 7th, please bring a copy of your motorcycle insurance card to tonight’s meeting. The Drill Team Captain, Dana McFee, will be collecting them.

Middlesex County Toy Run

"TOY RUN"  at the Old Saybrook Torch Light Parade.
Sponsored by the Public Works and Police Department

Bring new unwrapped toy to be donated to Youth And Family Services.

Saturday December 14, 2013 at 5:45 PM

Meet at Pond Road (Next to Dunkin Donuts Rt. 1) to form up to ride to the Old Saybrook Police Dept. Building on Main Street for coffee and donuts. About a 1 mile run.

Here is description of the Torchlight Parade from the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce

Name: Christmas Torchlight Parade
Date: December 14, 2013
Time: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Event Description:
Holiday Tradition in Old Saybrook! Parade features more than 20 Fife & Drum Corps, Christmas floats, bagpipe bands and marching units. Leading the parade for the 43rd time is the 5th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. This unit's history dates back to the Civil War. Public is encouraged to bring lighted torches, flashlights and/or lanterns.

Lighted Torches? Now that’s something I’d like to see. Average Mom’s and Pop’s with their 2.5 children walking in the parade or standing on the side of the road with their Lighted Torches.

NLMC Annual Banquet

The 1st hour was for socializing before dinner.

A number of people were surprised that Mark owned a tie.

And it wasn’t a clip-on either!

Here are some group shots:

Oops! Wrong Slide. Here we go...

Come here son and let me tell you about the meaning of life.

Who didn’t get a President’s Award Shot Glass?

The buffet is ready; let’s eat.

Dinner started with appetizers consisting of a variety of cheeses and crackers, a crudité (fresh vegetables with a choice of ranch and creamy Italian dressing) and a fresh fruit tray.

The main course included salad, dinner rolls, mashed potatoes baked in their skins, carrots, broccoli, chicken breast rolled with stuffing, bread crumb encrusted fish, sausage and peppers, pasta with marinara sauce, and a carving table with prime rib (I think).

Dessert consisted of cheese cake, coffee and tea.

Spouses of executive board members were presented with yellow roses in appreciation of their sacrifice. Although I thought I heard something to the effect of “Anything to get him out of my hair for a while!”

This was definitely a couple’s event. It was nice to meet some of the significant others we don't see often.

Hey, threes a crowd buddy!

Time for the Big Raffle!

LOOK OUT, HE’S GOT A GUN!

Oh Boy! Here we go again.

Oops! False alarm. But who can blame him, the lights were too low and everyone was having trouble reading their ticket numbers.

And just what was in that little pink bag donated by the Dunns?

Party Time!

The entertainment for the night consisted of a DJ trio that also did karaoke. They sang a number of songs themselves. Their voices were very good and they covered a nice variety of music.

Bill and Patty said this was Billy Gilman. I think they were right. Check out these websites: http://www.billygilman.com/online/home.html

Boston Red Sox Fans joined together to sing “Sweet Caroline” I think I saw a few Yankee fans joining in too.

Let’s Dance!

Doesn't it always start out this way. First a couple of girls get on the dance floor.

Then one or two guys get up the nerve.

Then everyone joins in, assuming that in a large group, their out of practice dance moves will go unnoticed.

Why is the guy leading the line dance the only one squatting down?

And yes, that is me on the dance floor. Tammy enticed me to dance with her, then she did the same to Keith Gowin, THEN she found her boyfriend, Gary and left Keith and I looking foolish!

I think everyone had a very nice time. I know I'm looking forward to doing it again next year.
