Was it just my imagination...

Or was the weather Sunday....GREAT!

I took the bike out early and it was like riding in summer. No Chaps restricting leg movment, fingerless gloves, jeans, a cut off tee and the vest. At first it was a tad cool, but after a mile the arms felt fine. I cruised around most of the day and it was wonderful not having bulky layers on.

klay

You know your neighbor is cool when you can trade with them.

It is great when you don't have to worry about getting something back when you lend it to them, and you know what was borrowed will be in good shape.

Here' is a couple neighbors sharing items during the last hurricane.

How else are you going to know how that color shingle looks on your house.

I am jumping the gun....but....

December is this week and that puts January just around the corner.

Last year we had a hell of a time getting and keeping Road Guards, I would appreciate a better year this year. It gets lonely out there by yourself.

So if you are interested in being a Road Guard, drop me a line or see me at a meeting. I would like to have a rough idea where we are before the year starts.

Thank you

Klay

Allison has made her photos available for viewing. They're really great! Please share with your members.
One of our shooters should be finishing up his editing this weekend. He's had a tough month.
Once his are finished we will make up disks for the models.
Very sorry this has taken so long.

Chili Cook off

On January 28th, there will be a very special fund raising event for a CT hero, Marine Greg Caron from Ellington, who on November 11, while serving his second tour, lost both of his legs, a finger, received shrapnel to the right side of his body, and a broken collar bone from an IED in Afghanistan.  He was transported to Germany where the initial surgery was performed; and he is now recovering in Bethesda, MD and is expected to be there for at least the next 6 months.

PGR's own RC MadMike Freeman is leading the charge with a very special Chili cookoff with all proceeds to benefit the Greg Caron Foundation.

Please see Mike's request below and respond back to MIKE ONLY, if you are able to help.

 PGR brothers and sisters,
I need 25 judges for the Greg Caron Chili Cook Off.  The judges meeting is at 1130 sharp and the day will end about 1600.
There is no criteria to be a judge; just your willingness to give of your time and an empty stomach.
Greg Caron International Chili Society Chili Cook Off at Pleasant View RT 83 (site of the NERCC) in Somers. Good food and a bar...and a GREAT cause what more can you ask for?

I sent out a text the other day...

to those that live in my phone, about a planned ride for Saturday (today). One of the responses I got back was from and employee, "Aren't you working Saturday?"
I sent out a cancellation.

There's nothing worse than an employee who knows what is going on when you don't.

Friday, I decided since I had to work til noon on Saturday, I would blow off work at 12:30.
That same employee said, "What about the meeting at three?"

He's getting depressing...even if he was right both times.

Luckily the meeting was cancelled so I had a half day.

Tree called me and asked what time I would be getting out of work, I told her noon, She said her and Tom would wait for me. Gerry and Linda showed up at work and decided to go on the ride also, but they were going to go home for chaps first. They would be there before me.

Well I didn't get out of work at noon, I got out at 12:17.  I called Tree and sent them on their way, they told me to hit 184 and I could intercept them.  I did, caught them just west of 201, made a U-turn and caught up. We made a stop for Tree to fill up at Col Ledyard highway before heading out, Toms rear brakes were still hanging up a bit and the smell had Tree thinking her Christmas lights were melting.

We headed along 184 to I-95 to rte 9. The sun was out and it was un-seasonably warm today, bringing bikes out of the woodwork.

We took 148 across to79 in Durham, then 68 to 157, 147 to 66 and stopped to eat at Guidas. A couple long dogs, a pepper-burger, a steak and cheese sandwich and a few fries later we headed home. 147 east and cruised over to rte 154 by the Connecticut River. Route 82 across the river at Goodspeed, Ray Hill to 82 and homeward. Tom bailed at 156, me and Tree took 85 crossed the Thames (after a detour through New London), onto 184.  Gerry and Linda never showed.

All in all a most pleasant ride, no traffic ever affected us over or back, and we had a nice chat at Guidas.

Happy Thanksgiving

and Safe Riding. God Bless everyone!
Tom Y

Sgt at Arms

New London Motorcycle Club

I just had a totally unhealthy lunch

I know it was UN healthy because it tasted good, and how good this was means I will probably drop dead tonight. Massive, grab your chest, blood pressure spike, aneurysm, coronary good.

I made shrimp scampi, but I...have you ever had Sicilian Shrimp Scampi at Olive Garden? They give you one shrimp scampi on a tiny piece of toast and it is good (I believe you get a total of 6). What I did was to cook up the shrimp in the Scampi sauce, then  take a Grinder Roll, dip in in the garlic butter scampi sauce, let it soak all that buttery garlic up, then toasted it. Once it was toasted and the bread was that toasted translucent brownish hew I added the shrimp, laid them out in three rows the length of the bread, then poured the left over scampi sauce over the top.

It was great!!!

Now white bread, when digested, turns to sugar in your body, which it stores adding weight to your frame. The butter congeals in your arteries cause fat globules and plaque. This is probably not really good for you, but since the world ends next December...who cares.

It would also be hard to stay awake after eating Turkey and it would be extremely difficult to carry on a meeting with everyone in the place snoring.

You haven't heard snoring until you've heard me (ask the Mudget plan riders to Vermont)

I hope you were...

If the weather here was like it was in Massachusetts you better have been on your bike. I spent the day in a car with Gerry Miner. It was a great day, the only thing that would have been better is if we took the bikes. The reason for the trip was Railroad photography, and it was not as fruitful as we had hoped but it was still a great day.

We found some great roads in Massachusetts. Route 70 from Worcester to Clinton along the side of the Wachusett Reservoir is full of twists and hills and fantastic views.

Route 13 between Devons and Squannacook is another good road as is 119 and 101 between there, Ashburnham and Gardner.

Ever seen a Solar powered Stop sign, Gardner has them:
Eight Red LEDs flashing, one at each corner

Another good road is route 116 between Amherst and Holyoke, past Dunn Park (did you know he had one?) . except that that road dumps out in the poorer side of the city and there are no enjoyable roads out of there.

Each of these would make a good club ride except we seem to need a place to go, instead of a giant loop. Maybe with a bit of luck I can find some really good place to eat up that way to give us a to and from point.

Mister Miner it turns out had no clue where we were, even as we got closer to home. I turned off 195 onto Bassetts Bridge road (you know the one Road Cap.) As I crossed route 6 onto 203 I asked him if he knew where is was, he said no, So I told him not to worry we were making good time. He started laughing and said “sort of like Buckwheat from the little rascal?” There was a little Rascal episode where the kids built a homemade Fire truck, a tiller truck no less, As they are going downhill Buckwheat is steering the rear of the truck and it drifts out and passes the front end. They yelled to him, “Hey Buckwheat, where you going?” he yelled back, “I don't know, but I’m on my way.”

The weather in East Deerfield around 2pm was in the high 60's with a warm breeze, it was T-shirt weather and I was missing the bike. No one else up there was missing theirs though, every bike in the area must have been out on the roads.

(York Party?)

Last night wet cold and wet

I rode home from work yesterday and everything was great. At speed on the highway the rain went up and over me, but for some reason when I got to exit 88 (route 117) the cars on the highway hit their brakes, from then on the way people were driving you would think it was a snow storm. They were cruising along with the speed fluctuating between 35 and 50mph. The rain no longer passed me, with the temperatures down the cold water felt like my face was being pelted with ice. I stopped at the Equinox for take out, had a coffee and got abused by the waitresses. One wanted to know where my rain suit was, I told her it was doing fine, nice and warm and dry in my right saddlebag.

This morning I found the car covered in ice, I expected the bike to be iced up in the shed but it wasn't it was actually pretty warm in there. I grabbed the Licence plate out of the bag, put it on the cage and took that to work. I made a stop on the way in at Stop and Shop. $200 later I was on my way to work again.

This morning I had two crock pots going, with Ham and beans in them, Currently down to one full and one empty. And I baked 20lbs of Italian Sausage, both sweet and hot, cut them up, threw them in a container with a Fra Diavolo Sauce, added some black olives and that is now in the fridge for Tuesday's lunch.

Don't take this personally...

but there is one great thing about cold nasty weather.

When it's the wet and damn uncomfortable time of the year most of you are not on your bikes. I'm not saying I don't like you all, I Love ya, I think you're great, but in cold crappy weather I can ride and not have to use  a CB. The people riding with me through the winter are few, which means if I have to tell them something or they me, it can be done by speaking.

Now you may not understand why using a CB is such a pain to me. It is simple, my bike doesn't have an integral one which cuts out the radio and modulates the systems or any of that other happy horse hockey. My CB is a portable, strapped to the handlebar with a power wire, microphone wire and speaker wire. Because it has a separate speaker wire it means that I cannot listen to music with the CB on, the radio has to be set to accessory. But that truley isn't the issue

This Is..

The biggest problem is smoking. It is almost impossible to get a cigarette out of a pack, dig a lighter out of a pocket and light the smoke while wearing gloves. Chaps, jackets, vests, Gerbing, thermals and any other crap we use for the season. But...without the CB plugged in...The cigarette lighter can be.

AND THAT makes the ride a whole lot better.

So, it isn't that I don't like riding with you, I just prefer to ride with a cigarette.

I am thinking of getting another pet.

I have been thinking of something a little different though...A Pig. They are after rather cute when they are young, they like getting attention, they are affectionate, and contrary to popular belief they are actually a clean animal.

It is we who contain they in their own filth. A Pidg I am told is actually easier to house break than a dog, and they make great watch...ah...dogs? Pigs!

The only problem I forsee is the size they grow to. Sooner or later...It will be rather large.

But then that is a blessing also, I just have to decide the name...tell me which sounds better....Bacon or Lunch?

Here Lunch!!!!

Here Bacon!!!

I think Bacon has a better sound to it when yelled.

A Harley SHOULD Thump when it idles...

I myself prefer the thumping noise coming out of the pipes. Now truthfully, with a Twin Cam, the Harley Thump doesn't really exist. That great sound went with the last produced Knucklehead.

But as I pulled up to a stop at a light Monday night I noticed a distinctive thumping noise come from the bike, annoyingly thoug,h it was accompanied by a chirping sound. Moving my head back and forth I could determine the noise was definitely coming from the back of the bike, (much better than the engine area), and it was from the left side.

The first thought that I had was, that of the impact I had with the other bike on the highway may have caused it. I had not thought to look past the cosmetic aspects of the hit. Could the bag mounts be cracked, maybe the support bar bent, or simply the bag mis-aligned. Today I took the bike to work, as is normal, pulled inside and checked the bag. The bag was mounted firm and was not integrally damaged. I removed the bag and checked the exhaust. Correct me if I am wrong but the rear pipe should not slide back and forth on it's mount. The hardware was tight but the bracket tracked in the rubber insulation mount.

So I did what anyone would do, I sent someone else to Harley for the replacement part. About $4.00 later the new rubber was installed and the exhaust secured. The original rubber mount had a small tear in it's side, I can't say it was from the hit because there are no marks on the exhaust, but Coincidence?

Our project is moving along.

From the President
We had a great turnout Saturday, windows and doors are installed and also the remaining 1x8 pine. Mike Bourett has a trim plan, and the material including another 240 lin. feet of 1x8 pine has been ordered to hopefully finish the job this coming Saturday. Evert took out the permit for the gas lines and is ready for installation. He needs a young guy or two to work with him in the attic. I have promised a material delivery by Friday so we should be good to go. If some has a cutting wheel tool bring it.
Saturday, 11/19/11, Clubhouse Work Party
0700am - Breakfast
at Herb's Deli, Rte 32
0800am - Volunteers needed.

Also, the gutters are packed with leaves. I have a 15 foot step ladder if someone with a truck can pick it up at my house and bring it over.

I took a cruise this morning

I had to bring my recently released relative to Uncas on the Thames this morning to get the paperwork set with the State of Connecticut. It was actually a good thing, I told Jr yesterday to let work know that I would be late. I picked up my rider (cage) at 7:30 and headed to the land of Uncas. when he went inside,  I dropped the seat back and got an extra hour of sleep. On the return ride I took rte 214 and I can report a major improvement over the single lane dirt road I dragged PCO down a couple months ago. 214 is now smooth as a baby's butt. so, get on your bike and try it out.

What a wonderful Job I have...

I have the wondrous joy of giving out helpful information and tips.

Today's lesson Boys and Girls is called...

"Bringing what you need all the way to where you need it"

When you are setting out on a ride, be it a quick joint or a long adventure make sure to take your time before you leave. Make sure you have everything with you before you leave and make sure what you have with you is properly secured. It is an undeniable fact that the only thing worse than getting where you are going and not having brought what you need with you...is to arrive where you are going and find that what you brought with you isn't with you.

Picture yourself....oh let's say...heading off on a long ride to watch a football game or some such thing, placing all your things in ....oh..lets say a backpack. You pack it full, including things like a wallet or credit cards, gas cards, debit cards, licence and keys, maybe a change of cloths, a drink, a snack and a jacket, You place it on your seat, strap it to the back rest and when you get off your bike about an hour later, turn around you find the back of the bike empty.

This, you should agree, would probably not be an enjoyable feeling. A thing like this could cause you to spend that night and the next day riding along the highway, with your friends or family looking around for it. The next thing you know you would be parked on the interstate highway, walking back and forth bent over, looking to the rest of the world like a poor confused unfortunate walking along the median divider. This is the type of thing that makes people call the Police and the next thing you know you are not alone on the side of the highway.

So... a word to the wise. When you strap something on your bike make sure it is well secured, double up the straps, do whatever you need to and double check it. I am willing to bet it is not fun to have your back pack shredded along with the rest of your items and having to walk around as traffic flies by looking as if you are on a demented scavenger hunt. Plus you get the added joy of being at a hardware store the next day having keys made because the ones that you found are a little mis-shaped. Traffic is not a wonderful thing to luggage of any type.

Double check your load, triple check your load. No one would want this to happen to them. Of course having these things happen...

Gives me something to write about, as I have said...I have a wonderful job.

Parade Drill Team Practice/Front and Rear Teams 6&5

11:00am Walmart's Parking Lot, Waterford then over to

North Pkwy (WFD Airport) for the actually practice.

Anyone interested in participating in the center team

please e-mail Jim Moran. There will be one practice for

that formation.

From the President

Thanks to all who supported the Ari Cullers funeral service. 25 Members, 15 on motorcycles, in the poring rain, on a work day, came out to show their respect and support for the family of Sgt. Ari Cullers. Little to give for what he gave. This is who we are and I hope we never

change.

Also, thanks to Bryan Kowalsky and Tom Yuchniuk who showed up on Wednesday, applied the first coat of Poly to the ceiling and installed 10 windows. This gives the Saturday crew a good start to get this project moving again. I hope not only the tradesman but laborers show up to help on Saturday. Thanksgiving and the Parades will rob some of our available time.

I'm Glad

I hear often that the Club's rules for riding are too stringent. I hear people say there are too many rules. Sometimes there are comments about riders resenting being told to ride better when they are see-sawing or drifting in the corners.

I myself have always appreciated the rules and I'll tell you why. It has nothing to do with "always being on Parade", (although watching our Club arrive and park always makes me smile when I compare it to other clubs, even when it doesn't go well and Tom cringes, we still look better). what I like about the rules is that for the most part...We ride good. we have policies for passing traffic, and merging with traffic. We ride safe.

This fact was pointed out to me again on Monday. when we ran escort for Staff Sergeant Ari Cullers.

Tree and I went straight to the airport and stood with the PGR (E-mail mis-understanding). When the Club arrived in force, flowed in and parked, they looked professional.

Leaving the Airport the Club followed the hearse, we filed in behind. As the column entered the Interstate at route 117, exit 88, we merged with traffic. The column was broken by a car, where the Club would hold behind the car and the lead would slow making the car pull out, this ride did not. The bikes behind the car pulled out, went around the car and pulled back in the lane. I followed a trike, we both pulled back into formation smoothly. Now the Club teaches us to take a mile to make up a 100 feet, in other words take your time, control the moment. The bikes behind us seemed to be riding with the thought that if they were stuck behind the car they would lose the column and never find their way home again. So they cranked up their throttles and passed the car. With the speed they were carrying what they had not accounted for was the column slowing due to traffic and the distance it would take to slow. One of the bikes behind me went out into the middle lane to avoid a collision, the next bike found that the stopping distance, at the speed he was traveling, was not enough to pull up in formation so he used my bike as a braking device. On impact the back of my bike kicked right, I held the bike and the line and continued on. looking in my mirror all I could see was a headlamp.

So you should be Glad, as I am, that I ride with the Club, ride with people who know how to ride in formation, Too many wannabees out there don't know how.

klay

PS:

Accidents can and will happen, it is inevitable. When it does happen and if you come in contact with another bike. After the ride, GROW A PAIR, walk up to the rider you hit, see if they are OK, see if their bike is damaged. Maybe explain what happened. For me I was not upset about being hit, things happen, it's life. I have another "less damaged" bag I can put on the bike. Don't be like the NUMB NUTS who hit me and then went and hid with the other riders.

Honda introduced the 2012 models

Honda introduced few of its 2012 models, including one of its most technologically advanced street bikes, the VFR1200F.

The VFR1200, (unique Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) system that eliminates the need for a clutch or shift lever), made its debut in 2010

In 2012 the bike has been updated, the biggest news is that the Honda VFR1200F now has traction control

Honda has also updated the DCT system, which now "intelligently optimizes shift points relative to the rider's throttle inputs for a more user-friendly operation." Honda is calling the updated DCT system "second generation."
Along with that, the engine power has been redesigned to boost low-end torque output between 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm, a larger 5.0 gallon fuel tank, and a revised seat for more comfort.

Drill Team Practice

From the Drill Team Co-ordinator

Next Sunday I would like to have a drill pratice. We will leave Walmart parking lot at 11 am and go to the airport road along side the North bound side of I-95 (behind the scale house). To far out to see the weather.

We will work on segment #1 (sno-man and circles)
segment #2 (dasiy-may and hammerheads)
segment #3 (four bikes in a box and two or three on free style hammerheads)

Tom Y. will work to fresen up the his show and we will try to get both front anf rear groups in on the judge flurish.
Anybody interested in being in or trying out for the precision riding part of the club this is a chance to see what your expected to do...maybe it for you or maybe not, you be the judge.

Today's Gift Ride

The Gift Ride was a great success both in Gifts and funds raised.

For the Club the day started with a meet at Dunkin Donuts on Colman Street in New London at 10am, from which we cruised down Colman to Boston Post. A right turn on Shaw street to the Rotary, then Pequot Avenue to "Stash's" for breakfast.

The lot was pretty empty when we arrived so we got straight in the door and sat down to eat. The meal this year was $8, up $1 from last year but still well worth it. At least one person did not eat because of his residual condition from the night before, and a couple others ate lightly for the same reason. The food was, as usual, excellent with the Bacon having a little bite to it, rather like it had been cooked with a sprinkling of Habanero.

After the meal we headed out of New London, up 32 to 163. Left onto 82 which took us to 85. We made a stop at the Speed Bowl to talk with some of the riders lining up for the Gift Ride. At 12:15 we were again on our bikes and heading up route 85 to Cross Road.

We arrived at Harkness dropped off the Gifts, had Coffee, Cider, and snacks and awaited the show.

The Turn out for the ride was impressive and the Raffle brought in over $1800.00
I myself bought 30 tickets at the Speedbowl, these tickets were Blue and started with a 5. Of all the Blue tickets that were called not one ticket beginning with a 5 was called. I was getting ribbed for buying tickets from someone who had nothing to do with the raffle.
At Harkness I bought 30 more, this time Red. I never saw the people selling the Pink tickets. I won twice (red tickets) both items I won were for cleaning your bike.

Since I don't believe in that practice I gave both items to Natale. PCO if you were there you probably would have received one of them from me, Because both were Honda products, Honda Spray Cleaner & Polish and HondaBrite?

 Not on my bike!

Looks like I missed a good time

From what I hear the theme of the Banquet, last night, was Control, or lack there of.

I can say from conversations at today's Gift Run just about everyone there got toasted, Some more than others. The VP was the major character in most of the stories.

I could name a number of the VP's actions during the party, but I think I will leave that to Thursday Night and the people that were there.

But...Dan!!!

Wow!!!

The Sobriety level in the following pictures is rather low.

I didn't feel sorry for any of the crash victims today because their malady's were self inflicted.

And I am PROUD to know them for each and everyone of the Casualties (in many different degrees of suffering) made it to today's ride,

Well...almost all of them, the one bike which stood out for it's absence was that of the VP.

Just a couple final questions, Dan...

Do you have any idea where that roll that you ate had been?
And do you realize that having your saliva in someones ear means you have to marry them in some countries.?

Good thing you don't live there...He already has a wife.

For those of you who were not at the meeting last evening

It is with great sadness I inform you that we lost one of our own.

Staff Sergeant Ari R. Cullers
A Prospect of the New London Motorcycle Club, a Waterford resident, a Hero, who lost his life in Afghanistan along with two of his brother soldiers defending this county.
He is the Godson of member John "Wolfie" Drew who was Ari's Club sponsor. He was a polite gentleman who attended his first meeting while on leave and was shipping out for his very last tour. He was so enthused about becoming a member of the NLMC he went out and bought a brand new motorcycle before going back to Afghanistan. He took with him one of our Club flags and had a picture taken with the flag and his entire unit. That picture will be framed and hung at the Clubhouse in memoriam.

We will assemble the Honor Guard at the appropriate time. We have no specific information at this time but I will alert you when we do.
