The New London St. Patrick's Day Parade will be on St. Patrick's Day this year which is a Saturday, March 17th.

The organizer (McSparran) contacted me to make sure we would be there. Apparently we are considered the rock stars of this parade. The Parade this year is supposed to be twice as long, and being a Saturday large crowds are expected.

I told him we could put on a show if the city could ban parking along the parade route. He said he would try to make that happen because he wants the show. There will be a packet sent to us.

I Had a plan

By Tuesday I already had a plan for Today, Saturday. I am good a planning things I want to do, not so hot at planning things I have to do.

The Plan:

On Tuesday, one of the Girls at the EQ and I had a talk about her car. It seems she hit and run a solid red object, a fire hydrant. She is young and dumb, she backed out of her friends driveway and right into the hydrant, not knowing what she hit, Not wanting to see what she hit, she did what any responsible driver would have done, she took off like a bat out of hell. Then she called her friend to find out what it may have been. (Myself I would have told her it was a kid on a bike and the Police are looking for her, but I guess her friend isn't as mean as I am.). Anyway, she damaged a small panel on the back of her car. So, I ordered the replacement for her and knowing she would not be working again until Saturday, I planned on delivering it, having breakfast, giving away candy to the little girls, then taking the bike out for a Saturday cruise.. So... I know...that was long winded for no reason but then if it wasn't long, you would have finished reading by now and would be doing something else. Back to it, Tree had asked what was going on this weekend, and remembering that I called her to join me for breakfast and a day of riding.

Reality: I drove the car to work, moved the bike from the back room to the wash bay and am currently typing this....at work. Yup...I am here till noon. No breaky, no part delivery, no candy for little girls, no ride.

Correcting an omission

Two years ago, (almost) I picked up my Glide, I chose it by color. The bike I chose came with ABS, a stereo, but no security system. But the dealer I was buying it from was more expensive than another, the other dealer got me the bike cheaper, the only difference was that this bike had no ABS, but had a security system. I could care less about either one.

Being a total vacuum head when it comes time to get a bike I forgot some simple things it needed. Rick pointed the most important item, The two into one exhaust the bike came stock with sounded like an idling refrigerator, so I had the Screaming Eagle True 2s installed and the Phase one upgrade.

I was happy, but the Road Guards weren't doing much with radios at that time and although I wanted the bike to have a CB, I forgot all about it. But honestly it wasn't that much of a big deal. Since then Radio Bikes have moved up in Club priority,

So...Today I ordered the "HD (Harmon Kardon) Boom" Bike to Bike CB module.

And I ordered the Console Switch kit. Which comes with a lot more than the console as you can see in the photo.

The antenna I bought last year.

Now all I need to do is come up with the money to get the Harness

And two Contact clips.

At that point I will be able to say "I have a Harley CB". Of course until I can afford to have it installed, I won't have a working one.

Federal Law Enforcment gears up.

According to a report from the Federal Government this morning, all Federal law enforcement agencies will become more civilian friendly. In much the same way New York City abolished the Leather jacket uniform the City police wore because it was too intimidating, the Federal Government has decided that officers are to be "more approachable". In order to do this the agencies will be issued new, Civilian friendly uniforms. Step one has been to remove the threat of the weapon. While the weapons carried will still be of the same calibre as the agencies previously carried, the new weapons will not look as "Threatening".

For the more combat oriented law Enforcement Agencies Like The FBI or ATF they will be using the Hello Kitty AR15

Did you know the State DOT has a ride plan

I found it on "Motorcycle USA". I..I mean we, have taken the Connecticut Scenic By-way ride quite a few times and never knew it was State approved. The link below takes you to the site. The ride is ....169. Although I haven't actually figured out why they start you in Norwich and send you to Massachusetts with no return loop. Maybe they're tired of bikers.

Looking through the Connecticut rides listed I have noticed that most of these rides seem to be for people who do not want to spend much time on their bikes. The "By-way ride" is 60 miles, Then there is the "Norwich to Massachusetts" ride at 38 miles, (which seeing as it is also route 169, and starts and finishes about the same place as the "By-Way" ride it makes you wonder where the other 22 miles went. The "Old Mystic to Jewitt City" ride looks real impressive 201 north for a grueling 21 miles. We have Club members that make that ride just to get to us for a ride, Hell we have them coming out of New Haven, Branford, Hartford, Tolland, and such to go on rides.

All joking aside, it is nice to have a site with rides listed. the Danbury Devils Den ride has a rather nice looking couple of spots on it, as does the Mohawk Mountain loop. neither is that long, but when you add the here to there and back again miles they make for a rather nice distance.

Each of the maps has the originating web page, a little more clicking and you may find more rides. So if you are out an about and want somewhere to go, check out the website above. It may give you an idea or two. Have a great time, take someone with you and have a better one.

The End is Nigh...

If that is true and the world is ending this year, I see no reason why we shouldn't spend every available minute we can on the bikes. So with that in mind, I backed the bike out of the back of the Parts department at work, kicked her over and hit the road.

Have you been outside today? Gorgeous. The sky is...sky blue (go figure), there are a couple wisps of clouds and the sun is shining bright. best of all, unlike most years, on January 24th the sun is actually providing warmth. I cruised up Chris Clone extension pulled a right on Hunts Brook another turn on Unger to Moxley. A turn left onto Old Colchester then a left on Chesterfield. The sun was flickering through the trees, warm air surrounded me, and I just lost myself to the twists of the road, the warm air and the sound of the exhaust, Heaven on Earth. There is absolutely nothing like jumping on a bike at lunch time to wash away the cares and put a smile on your face. With nowhere to go it was just a ride for a rides sake. The only problem with the day is that lunch will be over, and I have to be back at work. You know what... I may have gotten back a little late, but no one seemed to mind, I was smiling. When I am smiling it means I am not looking for busy work for my troops. They have Youtube...

What a Wonderful weekend!!!

Wasn't it beautiful, This morning I awoke to a glistening white world of snow and ice, the early morning sun had a golden glow to it and the entire world was bathed in its light. The shadows of the trees danced along the sparkling wintry ground. It was down right purdy....Now....that said...I've had enough of it. Yesterday I pulled the snow blower out and it still suffers from a carburetor fuel leak, so the bowl would fill, the unit would run, it would do one strip down the driveway and a 1/4 strip back up and die. Let it sit, let the bowl fill and fire it back up, do a bit of snow clearing have it die and go back to waiting.

Let's make a declaration and stick to it, "Winter is over!!!, We had snow, we had cold, now lets get on with the green season." I know I'm early, I know we have been lucky with the amount of snow we haven't seen but, I hate SNOW. So....let us move on.

Think positive, put away the long sleeve shirts, the heated gear, the thermals, the gloves. Whip out the Tee shirts, the jeans, and the sun glasses. Think positive....

There will be a Chili Cook Off for Cpl. Greg Caron who was wounded in an explosion on Nov. 11 in Afghanistan. Caron, 25, was severely injured by an improvised explosive device, resulting in the loss of his legs and a finger. He continues to recover in Bethesda, MD, following multiple surgeries.

Turn out for dinner was lighter than expected, so Thibbs had a surplus of food, probably something to do with the weather forecast.

The weather prediction called for a wintry mix with a possible accumulation of 1-2 inches.

The meeting began on time, Pledge, moment of silence, Roll Call.

The procedure was halted for a special announcement by the Club Chaplin / 2nd VP. so that members could sign a card for one our hospitalized members.

The Secretary made his usual report, nothing. The Treasurer talked about money in and money spent. The President talked about dealership flyer's. The flyer's are to be issued to area dealerships (by county) offering a one year membership to persons buying a motorcycle from the dealers. The flyer will work as a monetary coupon good for a one year membership amount. Subject will still have to adhere to all membership prerequisites.

The VP discussed the up coming Blessing, and mentioned there will be a committee meeting about that soon.

There will be a trip on Saturday for those interested. the club will be meeting at noon at the COLCHESTER Dunkin in their cars (snow predicted) for a run to the Motorcycle Expo in Hartford. This years Expo will be held in the XL Center (Hartford Civic center) instead of the Exposition Center.

The President has left the color palette decisions for the older Club section upgrade to the Women. They will come up with the re-painting info, but he did specify "Earth Tones".

The Activities Chair announced there will be a Card and Pizza night at the Club on Saturday the 28th, bring your own pie.

The Blessing contingent is looking for a new shirt supplier and the possibility of having long and short sleeve shirts done this year. There was also mention of changing the shirt design on the front to perhaps a Celtic Cross and the new title "Blessing at the Beach". The discussion of the new emblem brought about ideas ranging from everything like prayer hands, to naked women, to Jesus carrying the Cross riding a Scooter.
I believe I heard the Chaplin mutter "Heathens" under his breath.

Opening the door after the meeting it was realized that it was good that no one rode because there was about an inch of snow on the ground and it was still coming down.

The joys of using corn syrup for fuel.

Do you have a Snow Blower, how about a Lawn mower, perhaps a chain saw or a Motorcycle? Chances are you have corn powder in your fuel system. I bought a new Snow blower last year, it worked great, it is an Ariens Single-stage Sno-thro 22" - 522ec with a 5hp Tecumseh engine. This year...nothing. We opened it up and found the carb bowl, jets, needle valve and float caked with white globules. This is Corn residue. Even with the unit run dry last year the corn in the ethanol cakes everything.

So at work today my crew disassembled the unit. They took apart the carb and cleaned it, we changed the spark plug, the fuel filter and some line. They got it to run, but not for long. The unit starts and runs for about two minutes then starves out. So tonight one of the techs is taking it home. He says he has done four others this year and they all suffer from the same thing, corn syrup disease.

So, if you have a piece of power equipment you can expect it to be gummed up. The answer, I have been told today, comes from the marine industry, it turns out they have been plagued with ethanol problems since day one. Fuel stabilizer does not work for storage, even run out of fuel the corn "grows" in the fuel system. It actually eats into the aluminum housings. The marine industry uses a stabilizer that contains a corn eating enzyme. This seems, so far, to eliminate the corn issue.

I grabbed a ride with Jason to my house, we loaded the snow blower so I can work on it in the toastiness of a work bay. I started my bike, I told Jason to take off. I went in the house dropped my light jacket, put on my chaps, the Gerbing coat and gloves, my heavy leather jacket, and the skunk fuzzy. I went out jumped on the bike and took it back to work. It will live here til warm weather arrives again.

As I walked in my office at work to shed my gear a thought came to me, My smokes are in the light jacket....that's O/K, I can pick up another pack. Then another thought, my KEYS are in the other jacket. The Keys to work, my house, the Bike, and the car I plan on taking home.

Jason is currently on the way back to my house to get the other jacket.

I think the freezer burn damage my be permanent.

Stupidity Attack!!!!

After I started the bike yesterday and let it idle a bit, I figured a quick short hop would help get her to temperature. So with my leather jacket and gloves on I jumped on the bike and hit the road, no problem cruising down Godfrey onto Packer, right turn on Cow Hill, no problem, oh wait a minute, bald head, turned onto Ann Av., frontal lobe FROZEN, Ice Cream headache, cruise down Ann heading back to Godfrey, eyes squinting, forehead pounding, (I have a lot of forehead, it stretches from my eyes to the back of my head), Sinuses frozen, Pain, pulled up in the driveway, limped inside.

It was fifteen minutes before the skin, bone, and sinuses were warm.

It's Monday and I'm still waiting for the brain cells to melt.

The Bash for Bella report

The day was on the slightly chilly side, with the temperature hovering around 9 degrees F, (That would be minus 12.7777778 degree Celsius for the readers who live there). The Club met at Dunkin on rte 1 in Groton (next to Poquonnock rd), The majority of the Club arrived in cages but three bikes did show up. The Green bike didn't seem to have any complaints, Old Red was having low temperature tachometer issues, and Felicity didn't want to start the day at all, Ka-chunk-bang pffft, Ka-chunk-bang pffft, Ka-chunk-bang-vroom, burble burble. We sat around drinking coffee and talking before heading out, we were joined by Richie Rich from DNZ a one piece Club out of San Diego Ca.

The ride from Dunkin to Christopher's was uneventful, (all 178 feet of it). Once inside, raffle tickets were sold, drinks were had and the music played. Because the Club arrived in one unit, patches flying, and that we paid with one check, the announcer gave thanks to the Club for coming through in a big way. Most people stayed to eat drink and play the raffles, I followed Mr.Scarritt out the door and Tom l. followed me. I took a short cruise along route 1 to Mystic and the Equinox for lunch and Tom tagged along.
There really wasn't much riding involved, but it was still a reason to do something on a cold ass day.

I did determine one thing though, It is that time of the year for Felicity to change addresses, After fighting with the shed door and frozen ground, (I designed the shed door to glide smoothly millimeters above the ground as it opens, problem is, I forgot about winter, in winter, the moisture in the ground freezes and the surface rises. so it is a major fight to get the door open, pushing the top and kicking the bottom. Plus, she likes warmth, she starts better and runs better) So today, when the temperature outside comes up (predicting 32 degrees F, 0 Celcius), I will get a ride home, and run the bike to it's winter quarters in New London.

Mystery Rides and learning

The Road Captain added a new twist to the Mystery Rides. Tom will be adding lessons to the rides. This way you get a ride, have lunch and learn.

Sundays lesson was "The correct way to lift, load, and transport a bike.

A word of Thanks to two members for assisting in the lesson,

Joe Fogerty, for having a vehicle available to carry the motorcycle, and Marty for having a bike that needed to be carried.

If anyone is interested in helping with the next lesson, Tom is looking to show the correct and incorrect methods of hitting a deer. Volunteers need to contact the Road Captain for details.

Since the blog was started on may of 2009, we have had 32,699 page views. That's how many times someone opened the blog and looked at a page.

Of that amount, 3,300 people looked at one page. Our most popular page. "More Huh? feel the Arthritis yet? It is the posting (May 18,2011) showing TV stars then and now.

It shows you, most people look at the blog hoping to see nudity. the post had the most visits because of the pictures of one person. 1,715 found the page by looking for Kristy Mcnichol.

Not that I didn't want to, I just had family issues arise. but from what I hear, it probably wasn't one of the best rides the Club has had.

There was something about parked bikes, A pickup truck, and people lifting a motorcycle into it.

I did have some photos E-mailed to me. It is rather nice seeing the Club working together. Even if it is to lift a heavy object.

Secrets to riding an older bike

Older Motorcycles have a different quality to them then the newer models. Today's bikes are more reliable, more technically advanced, and more comfortable. If you owned an older bike you know what I am talking about. Today, anyone can go buy a bike and ride. Ride non-stop all season, then bring the bike in for service at a dealer where they change the oil, and run a diagnostic. Today you can go from point A to point B without any issues. Bikes made earlier had...issues. Not really issues, Duties, which must be performed on them. Parts failed, things broke, everything loosened. Today a rider can be a rider, go back 15 or 20 yeas and the rider was also a mechanic. You either worked on your own bike or you didn't ride it.

Here is the major secret to riding something from the eighties or before, be prepared. carry some extra hardware and a tool or two. You are going to need it.

Below are some tools you might want with you.

A couple sockets

A couple wrenches

some pliers

A saw

A couple hammers

Perhaps some bits

Some more pliers (visegrips)

Different hammers

Wire cutters

Some smaller pliers

An Air compressor

Then because things get dry...

Know your area

You should always know your surroundings, try to always have an escape route. In racing they call in run off areas.

If you are in a corner and someone comes around the curve in your lane, you want a place to go. If you are in traffic on a highway, always have in mind a place to head to if things go wrong.

And if you are an idiot, and you want to do a wheelie...it is always a good idea to know how much room you have to finish the maneuver.

Because of the volume of postings last year, there will be two books made.

The first book will cover from January 1st through June.

The books eta is set for January 29th.

The weather Saturday is suppose to be better than today's or Sundays. If you would like to turn a wheel, Mister Scarritt will be waiting at DD for a 10am departure. He brought it up during the meeting and Jim made him "King for the Day" . So if you want to join him...be there, It promises to be a glorious day.

I will be at work til' noon..and therefore unable to attend. I am not sure how many will be there, but they are sure to have a good time.

Mystery Ride!!!

Sunday 10am the Club will be getting on their steeds and meeting at the DD in Montville before 10:00am.

Our New Old Road Captain will be taking us on a jaunt along the State's glorious roads with a destination known only to him.

The weather will be in the upper 40's, so you know that means Tee shirt weather. So come out and join us, Enjoy the Sun.

Road Guards...I'll be there, We can probably use more than that.

The Ride will be starting at 10am and ending 2ish to allow all those that have to go to the "All Positions" meeting at 3pm time to do so.

(I'm rather nervous about that "All Positions" meeting, according to the "Kama Sutra" there are over a hundred positions. Have you noticed most of the position holders in the Club are guys?)

There is nothing like it

There is absolutely nothing like riding in the cold, it is invigorating. You get up early, put on your chaps, jacket, gloves, and some sort of thermal head wear (helmet, hat, whatever). If you are fortunate enough to have heated gear you throw that on, if not, you add thermals, upper and lower, maybe a couple shirts, some thick pants, heavy socks, and winter gloves. You may even add a face mask. You head to your bike, walking like the Pillsbury Doughboy, if you have it in a garage, good for you, especially if it is heated. If you are like me your bike is not in a heated area, it is in shed. You unlock the padlock and force the door open. The ground is frozen and because it is the door does not clear the ground, it scrapes it's way across it. Throw on the battery switch, hit the run switch, wait for the light to go out, then hit the start switch. The bike turns over slow, and louder than normal, it is as if it is telling you to leave it alone. It fires to life. You fight your clothing to throw your leg over the seat, start pushing back, moving the bike outside, up hill.

Outside you let it warm up, it doesn't want to be here, the oil is like mud, so it sits idling, getting warmer, and as it does you get colder. You squeeze the clutch, drop it in first, it goes in with a loud bang (Harley). You let the clutch out and start moving. The cold air blast past you, you feel alive, the cold hits you around your glasses. You stop at a light and the glasses fog up, As the fogged glow turns green you hit the throttle, pull the glasses away from your face to get air to flow around them, slowly, the fog disappears. The air is crisp and sharp, the sky is clear, it is beautiful. You are alive, there is nothing like it, and my day was nothing like that.

I drove the cage, Hey, it was 22 degrees with a wind chill of -3, WITHOUT being on a bike. You think I'm nuts?

A little clarification

The title of this blog is "Beard in the wind" and for those who do not know, although I post the Blog, I am not "The Beard" . This blog was started by the previous News Manager, Ron Durand, and while I have taken it over, he is the heart of the blog.

Ron was News Manager for quite sometime, and when he took ill, I was asked to fill in. Ron passed away a short while ago, and some of his ashes are in the memorial site at the Club, along with those of Charlie Kay and Bob Pepin.

Ron did not know it was possible to have the blog printed and when 2009 closed I had the original book made I had two done, one for the club and one for Ron. I heard later that Ron had always wanted his writing published and that book he cherished.

If you search back in the blog you will not see any "postings" by "The Beard". when I took it over and used my sign on it automatically changed the name on all the postings. But if you care to read his postings you can check out the posts between the beginning of the blog and April 2009.. Ron loved the Club and did all he could to keep it going, as a matter of fact, he was the only person I know of to have the Club patch as a tattoo.

Ron left us in April 2009 and I am sure he is still keeping an eye on us.

Well another year is upon us...

2012 rolled in just like any other day, no difference except maybe for the few of us that did not weather New Years Eve all that well.

The Club had it's first ride of the season, meeting at Norms Diner at 10am or earlier, some later. We had a great turnout, riders from New London, Windham, Branford, Middlesex, and Tolland/Hartford Counties were all present. The day started off cold and the roads wet from the night before but by 9am most of the black ice had disappeared, by 10am it was all gone. The temperature went into the low 50's on a sunny bright day.

Norms was packed, and as people finished we moved outside to allow others in to eat. Tom lead the contingent down one of, if not the worst paved road in Groton, Thames Street. The bikes were up front followed by 4 cages and two Road Guards to the rear.

All heads turned as we rolled into Eastern Point and parked the bikes. Every year we seem to find one more nut in the Club. Three years ago it was Dave Adams who decided to join the insane, strip down to a bathing suit and head for the ocean waters. Last year Dave was joined by his brother Doug in the loony run. This year, we found we have two more nuts amongst us, Dave was joined by Kaitlyn Perkins and Chris Llorett.
The run went off on schedule everyone ran in, everyone ran out clamoring for towels and blankets, but..two of the winter revelers continued to swim around out in the cold.

Our people came ashore and stayed ashore. Wrapped up or re-dressed they joined us and stood around a while talking as the crowd thinned. Tom again mounted his trusty steed, Old Red, and led the Club along the area's pristine paved bi-ways to Dunkin Donuts on route 82 between route 154 and the Goodspeed (East Haddam Bridge). Myself, having other commitments headed to the Dunkin at Five Corners in Groton. Having shed the jacket and chaps the ride there and back along route 1 to Stonington was a lot more comfortable. Joined at Dunkin by the three Divers of Daring-Do and one member who was dealing with the after effects of New Years Eve Alcohol intake partook in a cup of Joe and some more talking. Then... Dave headed off for a ride and I towards home as the cages headed to points unknown.

I have been on this ride to watch the rush to hypothermia four years now, and I can honestly say, the pictures I took look pretty much the same every year. A lot of standing around with no crowd on the beach, then the beach fills with the intrepid yet demented, Then there is a lot of splashing water, and shrieking, followed by more splashing as the herd heads back to shore, then there is some wrapping of blankets, some jumping up and down, and then we leave.

Jerry was born somewhere in Massachusetts back when gas prices were a lot cheaper. , Upon seeing him, and not wanting the same thing to happen again, believing there may be something wrong with the water, his father moved the family south to Connecticut.

When old enough Jerry joined the United States Airforce as a medic and volunteered for Vietnam, thinking there must be something wrong with him, they stationed him at Dover AFB in Dover Delaware as a Paramedic/ Surgical Assistant. There he assisted in the separating, sorting, re-assembling and identifying the bodies of the Canary Islands Plane crash.

After the Military, Jerry decided he had enough of short hair and let it and his beard grow, (looking a lot like Jerry Garcia). Wanting to continue in the medical field he found the the State of Connecticut did not have Paramedics at that time and did not recognize his military medical training. The best they offered at that time was EMT, so he took that training. Jerry was active in both the Mystic and Old Mystic Fire Departments and Stonington Rescue. He went on to become the Assistant chief of the Old Mystic Fire department and retired from that position this year.

He worked for the Town of Stonington WPC and as an Emergency dispatcher for the Town of Groton. After doing a few years stint with the Submarine Base Fire Department we went back to the WPC (now privately contracted)

Jerry's first bike was a 1974 Honda 360 twin. (before metric twins were V's) His next bike was a 1967 Harley Davidson Sportster 900ci Chopper, the bike was Black with flames, had a square tube frame and square tube springer. The backrest (sissy-bar) was tall with a chrome bayonet mounted between the bars.(This bike hated his wife and refused to start if she was around, if he did manage to get it running and she went for a ride on it....it broke). But once his furnace let go, the bike was sacrificed to the gods to pay for it's replacement. A number of years went by where neither finances nor time were available (spell: children) to purchase a new bike. Then his brother arrived from Florida with a Road Star Classic and once Jerry rode it the flame was re-lit. With the kids grown and money available Jerry set out to get a Road Star of his own. He came home with a 2009 Harley Lowrider, (Which everyone knows is not low at all). And the rest is, as they say history.

If anyone watched the video in the previous post, the rider (crasher) was wearing a GoPro Hero HD helmet cam. This camera has excellent resolution and sound producing a great picture, and it appears to be shock resistant.

First I didn't think the water crossing the road was that bad. BUT it must have been water with ice which is the worse because there is no traction and the bike wheels follow the curve of the road at two different speeds of drift and unless you can get one wheel on a tractable surface your cooked. I was thinking as he rode it's sunny, good view ahead, shadows are small and he's staying out of them when possible. Doing everything right, until all went wrong..

Second is what he's wearing. The only good thing to do with fingerless gloves is pick your ass or noise (you can choose which one first ) Then there is the foot ware...leather Loafers. WTF no sandals.

Third, He takes far to long to start getting his bike up from the travel lane just after the ice pavement. You want to clear the road to protect others as soon as possible. Leave the plastic and get the bike out of harms way, or there will be another crash right where he's standing.

He also can't pick up his own bike and when help arrives the only thing they do right is put out the kick stand. I know it's hard to buy a new bike and then drop it on the ground to learn how to pick it up. BUT do you want the first time to be in the middle of a heavy intersection in the rain. Learn how and you will know it for ever.

This movie is has great sound and quality showing a crash of a bike at 40-45 mph. It is great to use as a teaching tool. I know because I have done it and if you have, your ass and fore armare likely a bit sore just watching.

The BLOG BOOK

This years "Year Book" will actually consist of two books. Part one will cover January 1st through June 30th. The books will follow the two previous years style being in Gold with the year printed large across the top of the cover.

The first book (Jan. 1 - Jun 30) will be going to print shortly. I had a couple of people asking about receiving copies. This book will have 262 pages and will cost $109.65 before shipping.

Part Two (Jul 1 - Dec 31). I have no information as of yet regarding either page count or cost. This will be calculated in mid January.

If you are interested let me know, I will be holding off the order of book 1 until after New Years.
Book Two will probably run during the middle of the month.

Celebrated Christmas.

I have found that I really like Christmas. Let's face it, when the Truth about Santa comes to us the Magic of Christmas is lost. Childhood dreams become reality, and the day becomes what it was always suppose to be, a Religious holiday, although Corporate America would like to have us forget this.

But I found another reason to Love Christmas day, it may seem petty, and it sure isn't respectful. The reason is selfish and down right Heathen. But I like Christmas because of the sharing, and the family gatherings. Everyone gets together with their loved ones and spends the day with them surrounded by food and conversations. And while all this is going on....They are not on the roads! No One!!! Anywhere!!!! I cruised along yesterday after leaving Trees, I took back roads, middle roads and the highway. I went through downtown Mystic, and through the Groton shopping areas, and I WAS ALONE. It was wonderful!!! When was the last time you were on I-95 and there was no one else, anywhere, at all.

The roads were MINE, MINE I TELL YOU!!!!

Just me, my bike and the the great outdoors...Truly Heaven on earth.

Woke up this morning with a cats ass in my face, not a great start to the day, I would have preferred if she is going to join me in bed that she have the decency to at least face a different direction.

I did the laundry and awaited a phone call. Sandwich, if you are not aware, was in from Ohio. He called and we hooked up at the EQ. Timing for the visit could not have been better for him, with Tree laid up due to knee surgery, Sandwich had her bike to use, (his is back in the Toledo area). Reuben's favorite food is bacon, this is one area I really agree with him, the difference is I eat at the Equinox allot. So while waiting for him to arrive I ordered ham, toast, and coffee. Eggs are something I leave to Raccoons. Reuben arrived and ordered bacon. The Equinox gives a pretty good portion of the crispy pig product, but I believe they give you that much because it is the only way to get rid of it. The EQ deep fries their bacon, very crispy, no bacon taste.

After eating, we hit the roads, we cruised up and down through Stonington, North Stonington, Preston, Jewitt City and Norwich before heading for the Club for him to check out the "Pavilion".

The weather was fantastic and so was the ride, I had forgotten how much I enjoy cruising with that kid. Except for Montville the temperature was between 38 and 42. The bank in Montville said it was 58 but I think that may be a "tad" off reality.

Reuben handled Trees bike much the way he does "Le' Orange" and we only let off the throttle a few times. These were the wet areas along 201 and Northwest Corner roads. Shiny wet roads when the temp is hovering in the thirties gives one pause to think. I told Reuben he actually looked good on the bike except for that stuffed Pegasus on the bars. There's something about a biker in full leathers with a little girls stuffed horsey that doesn't seem quite right.

Being able to cruise with him was a pretty good Christmas present. At about 1230 I surrendered him to the highway and to return to Amanda and I headed home. He will be heading back to Ohio in the morning.

A good couple days

Saturday, Reuben (Sandwich) and myself headed to Montville to the Dunkin to hook up with those members heading for the PGR flag stand in Taftville. We arrived to find Paul N. and Tom L. at coffee. We were joined by Evert G. and Danny D.. At 9am Paul lead the six of us up 32 to 2a (395 north) to 2, bypassing Norwich, past Backus then 169 to South 2nd in Taftville. We pulled into the Knights of Columbus to meet the PGR riders. After a little bit of standing around outside we moved inside to the heat. As a recognition of Sandwiches Holiday visit he and I had drink.

As the time approached for the flag stand we mounted the bikes and moved a couple blocks up and parked the bikes on a side street, picked up the flags and waited. Here there was a simple intelligence test given. The only Club members who passed this test were Dave Adams, Myself and Sandwich, We stood on the sunny side of the road while the rest of the Club chose the shade. Failing this simple test were, Tom L., Paul N., Kim St. H., Marty C., Tammy P., Patty and Bill D.. There was a significant difference between the sun side and the shade. Those in the shade suffered cold fingers and feet, while we were noticing how warm it was wearing leathers.

At the designated time The Norwich Police escort rolled in followed by the PGR flag bikes and truck, and the Norwich Police bringing up the rear.

A member of one of the last groups to come home from Iraq, U.S. Army Pfc. Tyler LaFlemme (82nd Airbourne) was met by about 40 flags, friends and family.

It still amazes me how young these kids, volunteering to risk their lives to protect this country, are. And this was one of my more favorite PGR missions. It is an absolute pleasure to welcome them home while they are alive.

After the stand was over, many of the Club went their own way. Sandwich and myself joined Tom for his annual Christmas Eve shopping spree, while Kim St. H. joined us for the ride down as far as New London.

We met Jason at the mall, Tom did his shopping while the three of us took up position as his entourage. Shopping over we headed for Applebees for lunch. This over, I headed to Wally world, Jason home, and Reuben followed along with Tom to Mikes Harley. Mikes was closed, Tom headed west, Reuben headed to North Stonington.

Christmas day:

I awoke to find my favorite type of Christmas...brown. Most people get all ooy and ahhy over a white Christmas, I find that to be totally over rated. A white Christmas to me means a number of things. First, there will be some shoveling to be done, NOT one of my favorite things, Second, anything not shoveled will turn to ice on concrete and pavement. Third, I will not be able to have a bike under me.
Forth, Snowy icy roads means rock salt and sand, This means wet slushy, salty dirt, all over the bike when the roads are clear.

Danny is Anal, but it's OK...he knows it

Yesterday the weatherman predicted (guessed) that it would be 53 degrees F and sunny, amazingly enough, I had the day off.

I had a call from The VP at 7am, (he is on vacation until January something) So being prompt I got right back to him...at 9am. I headed to the Equinox for Breakfast and to wait for him. In case you are not aware of it, it takes him a long time to get dressed, clean and polish his bike, and inspect his yard for wayward leaves and such before he hits the road.

Breakfast was free, a Christmas gift from the Morning waitress. Done eating I went out to the bike, had a smoke, watched traffic go by, had another smoke, watched some more traffic go by, went for a ride around Old Mistick Village, three times, then met him back at the E-Q before we hit the road. The sun was shining bright the temperature was up and he arrived in chaps, leathers, gloves, heavy sweatshirt and all other winterized accouterments. I told him he was a little over dressed.

As usual Danny had me lead, I am not sure if he has a sense of direction. We cruised up Coogan to JB road then down Pequotsepos and across the hilltop roads on the Stonington side of Mystic. As we rode the clouds rolled in , I stopped at the station (railroad) and changed my cutoff gloves for full gloves, Danny gloated.

From Mystic we cruised east through Stonington, Great town, lots of women running along with short shorts. We headed up South and North Anguilla to rte 184 and North Stonington. We cruised across 2 to Cossaduct Hill road (201), I turned onto Northwest Corner road and for the first time of the Day, Danny had no idea where we were. He had an issue with a vest chain so we stopped on 165, he fixed his vest, I topped off the tank and put on Chaps, more gloating.

West on 165, Dan suggested we stop by and see Rick, a right on McClimon rd, a right on Jewitt City road, this took us up to 164, although Danny was once again...lost. Love doing that to him.

Into Jewitt City on 201 out of Jewitt City on 138, in Sprague we took 207 west across rte 32, good speeds along the route and caught a green light for the 32 intersection. 207 through Lebanon, and we pulled up in the wilds at Ricks.

Now, here is where we get back to the title of today's entry, Danny does not like mess, everything...EVERYTHING has to be neat and tidy. Rick was sitting on a stump next to a wood splitter, he had a nice pile of split wood in front of him and more tossed in the wood shed, this bothered Dan. Danny doesn't like to see things not finished, if it isn't finished, it isn't Dunn. So off came the leathers, on went Ricks work gloves and he went to work. I fed wood to Rick, and tossed those that did not need splitting to Dan. The sun was out now and it was warm and toasty. Dan stacked everything that wasn't stacked when we arrived and everything Rick split while we were there.

At about 1:15pm we said our goodbyes to Rick and headed out, Danny suggested we take 207 and 16 over to Colchester then 85 back, I suggested that he should do that, but it made no sense for me to go to Colchester when I live in Mystic, so at the end of Clubhouse road we went our separate ways.

Does this story have a moral....no

Does it have a reason that it was written, sure, I was at work, and I was bored.

Does it have a message, definitely, if you are in the middle of a project, doesn't matter what, and there is cleaning up involved, invite Danny over for a visit, don't tell him why you are really inviting him, just tell him it's to visit. When he gets there, I guarantee he will take care of what ever needs cleaning up.

If you need more proof of this, ask Tom. when they were working on the club, Danny went around cleaning up the area, picking up wood scraps and burning them, even scraps that weren't scraps, small pieces to be used elsewhere went away, Notes with measurements went away.

Call him, he lives to tidy up, I'll bet even Vanessa will tell you, he makes a wonderful wife.

I love riding behind that bike, the frames on the older bikes were not welded, they were drilled and pinned, which is really fitting. It's rather like senior citizen hip replacement technology. As the bike rolls down the road it tracks straight and rides straight but gives the impression that every part of the bike wants to go in different directions. The right rear saddle back with the no longer available from Harley rear cover latch not working adds to the effect. The lid hangs out to the right and bounces along as the bike cruises the roads.

I get the impression that if it were a person it would be wearing a fedora. That would be a male of course,if it were female it would have bluish gray hair.

Wait a minute...was that bike grayish blue over red originally, or was the Ev's?

Chris I can say did NOT hit a deer. The problem is my informant doesn't read long stories on E-mails or the blog. He SCANS. So he saw "Deer", "Chris" "Motorcycle" and "crash" and filled in the rest with his imaginative imagination.

Having him actually READ the message aloud, the truth is more like this.

"Chris" was cruising along and a "Deer" jumped in front of him. He made an avoidance move but the "motorcycle" hit the painted line, skidding him into a cement curb on Vauxhall street. The crash did damage the front of the bike. Chris limped the bike home.

During the meeting Dave Adams stated that he hit another deer with his bike, then he produced a fuzzy fake antler out of his shirt.

A week ago Tom mentioned that the next person to hit a deer to hit it broadside so that we could have the head mounted on the Club-house wall.

Well last night, while a group of us headed off to Dunkin, Chris L. went off in his own direction. Unfortunately, from what I heard this morning, his direction was on a direct intercept course with one of the afore mentioned fuzzy critters. The bike I have been told maybe Totaled, but more importantly, Chris escaped with only scratches and bruises.

So Chris, I am glad to hear you are OK, but did you get to save the deers head? It might go someway to softening the fact that The Clone is Dead.

A new lesson learned

This lesson has to do with protective head wear while riding.

There are many styles of protective head wear, Full face helmets, half helmets, 3/4 helmets, etc.

I prefer to wear cotton/poly head wear while riding (above 20 degrees F), This keeps the top of your head warm and dry. My particular choice in gear is much like the one pictured below, albeit in black.

Now you will notice that the hat has a chin strap of sorts. This strap's function is to get picked up by the wind and float around in front of your face while riding unless you tighten and tuck it in your jacket. I had found this out quite a while ago and usually do just that. Sunday though I forgot, I was riding along the highway and the strap started floating around in front of my face. Now, cruising along at 80 plus mph (with traffic) means you cannot just let go of the bars, grab the strap, pull down on the tassel end with one hand and slide the leather tightening ring upward with the other. Sometimes you can catch the ring with your teeth and use them to pull against to tighten the strap but I digress. What I did Sunday, instead, was to simply catch the strap in my hand, throw it over the hat so it was behind my head. this worked fine and there was no issue until I was on route 161. Here is where I learned a lesson. with the strap behind your head, if you turn to look at something the strap drags along your back and shoulders, where, if you are as lucky as myself it can catch on your opposite side jacket epaulet. You won't notice it do so...until you turn your head back to the travel direction and find you actually can't turn your head back to the travel direction. the strap has firmly attached itself and has anchored your hat in the left "sightseeing" position.

From this time, until you are able to dislodge your "leash" you are cruising along, with your head turned left, trying to look right and keep an eye on where you are going until you can dislodge your tether. Looking out of the corner of your eyes while riding down the road does make the ride more interesting.

I can say I saw more Christmas lights than I normally would have.

I awoke late, having slept through two alarm clocks. I was so late that I decided to forgo the bike and took the car. Normally I would have been up at 6 and had plenty of time to put on the chaps, heated gear, jacket and vest, then unlock the bikehouse (like a doghouse for a bike), warmed it up and leave, but luckily I was late and could not do all those fun things that need to be done to ride. I say luckily because as it turns out there was a tad bit of frost on the I-95 bridges over the Thames and a number of cars spun and crashed on it, both directions. (North and southbound bridges), but being late, and being in the car, there was no such drama when I arrived. This I feel was probably a good thing, I some how feel that putting your bike and yourself on the ground while traveling on a highway, amongst a pack of spinning and sliding cars, would probably have been a bad thing. That sort of thing might damage your ride and give you an ouchie or two.

Today I awoke on time, and I can happily report that the bridges over the Thames were wet, but not slickery in the least.

The Niantic Light Parade was tonight.

I have done the Groton Parade and I have done the Montville Parade, but until tonight...I had not ridden the Niantic. I have to say...it is the most interesting. The amount of floats and the amount of work they did on them was amazing!

We met at Mickeys on 161 in Flanders and proceeded to the parade Staging area. Traffic on the way into town was ridiculous so we pulled off and took back roads over to 156. After checking with the Parade Marshal Tom came back and told us there was no set order but we had to make sure we were ahead of the horses.

The Parade kicked off with fireworks which the two horses behind us did not appreciate. We had already noticed that the wagon the horses towed, backed up occasionally as the horses waited and we decided to move the bikes away. This would turn out to be a good move because once the fireworks started the horses grew a little nervous and before it was over they had moved the cart back a good 10 feet. had the bikes still been there they would have been doubling as wheel chocks for the wagon.

People lined the roads, I had been told that Niantic had a big turnout but this was far and above what I was expecting.

It was an interesting parade and we had (per normal) the Main Drill Team leading, followed by the Club riders, then the Second Drill Team bringing up the rear. I had no lights on my bike so I was positioned in the Third row of bikes between Dana and Kim St. H.

I stalled once, on the downhill. When my bike starts to overheat it goes into cooling mode, It shuts off the rear cylinder and that cylinder becomes an air pump to keep the engine cool. Dana and Myself were playing Christmas music over the radios and since I could not hear the engine, I forgot to blip the throttle to kick the rear cylinder back to life before moving...so...it died. No big deal, the starter brought it back to life pretty quick.

After the Parade we headed to Illianos on 161 for supper and chat, Chris did not seemed to be too thrilled when Rich set him up with a Birthday cake and the Club sang happy birthday. All in all a Great night.

Kudos to Wolfie, Dave Adams, Linda Graser and Kaitlyn Perkins for their work in walking ahead of the Club moving the Crowd back so the Drill team could do their thing.

Two things about the evening that stood out for me. A load of Candy being tossed out of a Tourpack and the resulting swarm of children to hit the street for it. (Looked like a Seagull attack).

The other thing that sticks out is watching my mirrors as the second team behind us and seeing the movement stop with a great cluster of lights in the middle of the road. This brought about the best quote of the night, the quote came at dinner, it was..."I didn't fall down...I ran over Danny....then I fell down".

Riding warm and toasty...Heated equipment

Let's face it, if you are just jumping on the bike to run to the corner store all you need to do is dress warm. your body will stay warm inside your clothes for a short period. But if you want to ride, Then you need the correct gear.

No matter how you look at it, riding in the cold can be more than bone chilling and ear burning, as your body loses heat it also loses maneuverability. Muscle tightens as the body tries to keep the trunk warm.

Heated gear is the way to go, it keeps you warm, comfortable, and operating without bulky layers of clothes which can also restrict body motion.

What you need depends a lot on the individual and how far you plan on riding. You maybe able to get along with a sweat shirt under leather and heated gloves. Fingers, it seems, feel the cold the earliest and the most. Heated gloves come in many styles, plug in or rechargeable battery powered. They are made by many companies such as Gerbing, Grabber, Technic Longear, and Venture with prices ranging from $15.00 to $211.00.
You can be sure that the cheaper the price, the cheaper the product. battery powered also limits the ride time to whatever the battery can hold rather than running off the bike.

For the quick commute or short rides (think parades ) battery powered may be the way to go if you are strapped or cash. These are also good if you don't plan on riding often and don't want to make a huge investment. But remember not to go too cheap, You should also keep quality in mind. It makes no sense to spend a few dollars today and find that the item doesn't last. So if you are planning short to medium length rides I would suggest a mid-range priced item. Something with a good name. remember not only does the item have to have heat but you have to be able to wear it more than once and you have to be able to wear it and be flexible enough so you can control your sled.

For longer rides there are a number of companies that offer heated gear and you can decide how much of the ensemble you which to wear. Myself I have the gloves and jacket liner by Gerbing. I run that with thermal pants and chaps. But the truth is, if you are going to be on your bike for an extended period of time the full suit is the way to go.

There are jacket liners (which you wear inside another jacket) or heated jackets. There are also heated vests. Pant liners and pants, socks and sole inserts, No matter what you get or where you get it, none of it works until you buy a controller to run the equipment. (Harley requires a separate power connector, the others include that wire with the controller).

I have been in love with my Gerbing wear from the first day I tried it. I turned it on high to test it out and riding down the road I could smell that smell electrical items make when they are new, and the heat on the arms (short sleeve) was almost painful. I started to wonder if it was going to light up.

From that day on I have ridden all year long. If there was no ice or snow covering the roads I was heated and riding.

At the end of last year the right glove stopped working, the problem, it turned out, was not the glove but the power feed in the right jacket sleeve. The end of the cold weather was upon us so I put the gear away. It sat in my closet all spring and summer. I knew I had to buy a new jacket but who can part with a few hundred dollars these days. In October I mentioned it to Evert and he told me Gerbing is warrantied forever. MY GOD!!! I wish I had talked to him last Spring. I called Gerbing and found he was correct, The Electrics are guaranteed, the fabric and such is not. they gave me a Auth. number and I sent it in. Gerbing told me it would take 6 to 8 weeks. That was October 19th. Since then I have been fortunate that the weather has been warm. Last night, December 7th, I came home and found a soggy box on my front walk. My Gerbing jacket had come home, 7 weeks and it was back. I awoke this morning and the temperature was closer to where it should be this time of year. I guess gerbing is better than I thought, not only did they get my jacket back to me in the time they said they would, they kept the weather warm until it came back.

What a company !!!

Sat. 12/03: Mike Bouret & Jim McCabe got 2 doors and 2 windows trimmed. EXCELLENT job!

Fri. 12/09: Bryan Kowalski will be putting a second coat of poly on the ceiling, which means no cutting cannot be done inside as we need to keep the room as dust free as possible. If anyone is available to assist Bryan it would be appreciated. He will be doing this by hand as there are now obstacles in the ceiling to navigate around. We have a temporary Propane Fireplace setup as it will be cold.

Events:

On Sunday 12/4 NLMC took first place in the Montville Holiday Light Parade in category of Best Motion.

On Saturday 12/3 NLMC is rumored to have taken 1st Place in the Groton Holiday Light in category and overall. Not official yet, awaiting word.

On Sunday 12/11 we will perform in the Niantic Light Parade which will begin and end with Fireworks. We are hoping for a great turnout of riders. We never seem to get better the 2nd place at this one so we just try harder.

A personal note about the Groton Parade

I believe that Club should win top over all participant. They were the only thing that put on a real show.

There were only two other groups doing anything, one was the Shriner's, who rode in circles on their mini jeeps.

The other group that did something was the golf cart following the horses. They actually got the most applause, (after the Club). They just cruised along and every so often stopped got off their vehicle,with their shovels, cleaned up after the horses, waved and drove along again, awaiting the next call of duty. (dooty?)

The meeting started at 7 or maybe a tad later and Margo was back after a little respite. She had been away so long that she had forgotten her Meeting agenda and she had, surprisingly, not signed anyone in....including herself.

So... Roll Call was postponed till after the minutes were read and the sheet was sent around the room. The meeting was ...not loud...but..busy? Lots of conversations.

We added another motorcyclist to the roster tonight, this one has gone through 4 bikes, a comment which brought a question from Tom..."Gone through...wrecked or sold?"

For those of you interested in Tattoos she has a few, but unlike An earlier female member...she did not show them.

After the meeting the normal contingent went for coffee at Dunkin Donuts....except we didn't...Dunkin is still under construction so coffee was served at Micky-Dee's.

The conversation turned towards this years Sturgis, and we started talking about other things to do out there. You see, The Best part about Sturgis is the ride out, the rides around there and the ride back, as for Sturgis itself it's just like any other Biker get together...leather goods here, patches and pins there, Bar here, accessories there, Women and Bikes everywhere. Walking around these meets is just like any meet be it Daytona, Myrtle Beach, Sturgis or Laconia, it is the roads that makes each ride different.

Around Sturgis, for sight see'ers you have Mount Rushmore, Custer's Battleground (Little Bighorn) and the Badlands. Tom mentioned that there is a different philosophy regarding public safety out west, In the east the roads are lined with guard rails, barriers and exit pillows. In Connecticut if there is an accident and a guard rail gets scratched the crew is out there the next day so that the next person can hit straight shiny guard rails instead of bent rusty ones, it is as if Connecticut covers every inch of highway in some type of protection so they cannot be liable. "Out west you have pavement, then dirt, then...an abyss.The western way of thinking appears to be, if you can't keep it on the pavement you belong in the Abyss, this way you are not a detriment to Public Safety."

Or was the weather Sunday....GREAT!

I took the bike out early and it was like riding in summer. No Chaps restricting leg movment, fingerless gloves, jeans, a cut off tee and the vest. At first it was a tad cool, but after a mile the arms felt fine. I cruised around most of the day and it was wonderful not having bulky layers on.
