The Sunburners are home

Left Roanoke Rapids South Caro this morning arrived home 600 miles later.

I'll bet they miss the warmth of the Southern Climate and hospitality. Up hea' not only is the weather inclement but we get to be rude to you.

There's a rumour that Mister Thibbs will be cooking a special dinner tomorrow night at the Club, using delicacies he picked up along his travels. He just has to scrape the bits of tar and road dirt off the carcasses.

MMMMMMMMMMM mmmmmmmmm.  Thare ain't nuthin like a roadkill fricassee.

When car racing was REAL

http://devour.com/video/vintage-race-car-crashes/

From the President Mystic Irish Parade Report

19 Bikes and 20 members braved the threat of cold, and the threat of rain and met at the Equinox Diner. 18 Rode in the parade while Dave Adams and Katlin walked the route keeping spectators on the sidewalks. It was a few less than we had for the New London Irish Parade, 26, but considering the weather forecast I was impressed.
We staged at the Equinox Diner for NLMC then rode as a group to the Parade staging area for about noon.
We were moving around 1:30pm and ended at 2:30pm. Other than a couple of minor mishaps both front and rear drill teams did great and the crowd cheered us on. We ended with a big kudos from the
reviewing stand, and rode scenic Rte 215 to the Dunkin Donut's (Jane's Place) on Rte 1 in Groton across from Citizen's Bank for refreshments.

Good Time!

Lands end...northbound.

After Jim and Thibbs spent a bit of time visiting Craig and Ginny they awoke to a chilly morning yesterday. The temperature was hovering around 82 degrees. The night before they went to Dinner with them at "The Lube" in St Petersburg, 90 miles each way, The restaurant had race cars (Nascar) and corvettes on the walls. They also went for a ride with Craig's riding friends 15 gentleman of which one was 78 years old.

They departed yesterday morning to head south to key West to MP 0.

They arrived at the Buoy at the South end of the United States and found a lot of Tourist having their picture taken in front of it, so they did the same.

Today the boys are heading north...as if there was any other direction they could ride.

Beautiful day to be riding!!

After an organized recruitment effort by a couple of members.. we departed from Durham DD at 11:00ish and took rt 17 to 79 to Higganum Rd, to 154 south, a left onto 82 and a stop at the DD to pick up Tom Y. From there we went over the bridge to Goodspeed Opera House, a quick left up 149, followed that to RT 66 then another quick left onto RT 85N all the way to Lake St. Missed a turn or two and a couple of U-turns later we rolled into Rein's parking lot.

11 Bikes and 12 riders and 1 minivan showed up at the Durham DD, but somehow we grew a bit and had a total of 17 eaters when we sat down at Rein's. The food was excellent, place was a bit crowded and they didnt accomadate us all together but somehow we managed to eat the food anyway! There were lots of pickles, overstuffed sandwiches, some tongue was eaten.. and the best onion rings Ive had in over 20 years.

After lunch, some folks went their own way, a group headed over to Hot Leathers in South Windsor where more money was spent on vests, facemasks and helmets etc. The route back was Rt5 to Rt2 to Rt17 and a final coffee stop before heading home. Weather was really nice for the entire ride.... and Rein's Deli is definitely worth a return trip.

Saturday's ride

Having already made plans to have a rider I knew I would be unable to meet the Club for the ride to meet Vinny in Durham. So I contacted Danny and we met at the Dunkin Donuts at 32 and 2A at 8:30. Our bikes topped off we headed up rte 395 to 2 to 32 to pick up my rider in Franklin.

With her on the back of the bike we took 32 to 207 to 16, cruised through Colchester to rte 149 which we followed through Moodus to East Haddam, crossed the Connecticut river then ran north on 154. My plan was to take 154 to Chester then shoot across the state to rte 17 below Durham, but I am stupid. Cruising north on 154 it wasn't long before I remembered that Chester was south. But seeing as I have a distinct aversion to U-turns we continued along 154 till we arrived at Higganum were I took us onto rte 81 to 9 north. We jumped off exit 11. This exit f sucks, as anyone who has used it can tell you, it is a sharp right with an opposed camber and the pavement is crap. Managing not to drop off the exit and fly down the grass hill we arrived at rte 155 which took us to rte 17 south where we arrived at Dunkin at 10am, one and a half hours before the 11:30 AOB. Luckily we found Sean Legacy parked out back he having arrived shortly before us. We went in for coffee and it wasn't long before others arrived.

We departed Dunkin a tad early in order to meet up with those members of the Club that had met in Montville for the ride. Vinny took us down 17 to 79 where we turned east on Higganum road which took us back to 154. We met the Club group at Dunkin on 82. The group from Montville consisted of 1 bike, Tom Yuchniuk. Vinny took us across the river to 149 which took us north to 16. We crossed 16 and stayed on that road til we arrived at Old Hartford road. We took a right then a left on 85. We continued to cruise north until we arrived at Riens Deli in Vernon. There we met up with The Cropleys and Evert. We had seventeen people and helped fill the restaurant more than it already was. After a great lunch we broke up, small groups heading in different directions. Vinny's main group headed for Hot Leathers while Evert, Myself, Tom Y., and Danny went east on 30 to 31 then 44 to Mansfield and UConn for ice cream. From there we headed down into Willimantic, deposited Julie in Franklin then south on 32 and we split up in Norwich. Tom to 395 south, Danny into Norwich then 32 south, Evert off in Norwichtown and myself rte 2 to 177 and home (Equinox). In Vernon the sun was shining and the air was warm, I contemplated dropping the jacket and just using the vest but just settled on shedding the chaps, down below Norwich I was actually glad I kept the Jacket and sorry I dropped the chaps.  All in all a rather great day. (Any day on a motorcycle is a great day)

For those that were with me when we dropped Julie off....

THat is Julie on the left, Her mother in the middle and that little kid on the right...
That would be her brother, the one that came down the stairs when we dropped her off. You might say he got a tad taller, but then...the photo above was taken June 1997.

Conceptual design

While a concept car or motorcycle is suppose to be a stretch of the imagination, a what could be or a what if, most concept vehicles are down right ugly or beautifully impractical. Once in a while though a vehicle is designed that even over 60 years later you say..."I would love to cruise around with that."

Take the 1937 BMW R7 concept.

This vintage BMW was locked away in a crate for almost 70 years, that crate was opened in June of 2005.  This 1937 BMW R7 was only a concept motorcycle at the time, a vehicle built for speed but never intended for mass production.  Since the crate was opened, this R7 has been faithfully restored to its original condition and is currently touring European bike shows.  If this unique BMW R7 were ever to hit the auction block, you can almost bet that it’ll set records.

Of course there were concept vehicles that were a little over the edge, some a tad strange looking, but tell the truth, the 1957 Buick LaSabre Concept car...would you throw her out of your garage?

The more you look at her lines, the more you say...Wow.

OH MY GOD

Have you been out in the world today or yesterday? If not...there may be something wrong with you or your schedule.

Look  out the window! The sun is shining, the air is glorious and smells of spring. Tell your boss you aren't feeling well...you have workethicitis. Fire up the bike and hit the road.

I took the bike out yesterday after work and just stayed on it till around...I don't know... five minutes before Dan called me...eightish maybe.  Let me tell you what it was like, cut off gloves, light jacket, no head gear, no chaps. The warm air encircled you as you rode. The scents of spring were in the air and... there were dead bugs on the windshield.  Bug Splatt !!! Just like in summer.

So stop sitting around on your ass...it is beautiful out, it will be nice tomorrow, Thursday is suppose to be in the eighties. Actually you might want to tell work you have something more serious..perhaps...Fullthrottlefluenza, that way you take take the entire week off.

Do it now though...Saturday is suppose to be cool, Sunday the rain and cold wind will be rolling in. Next week is suppose to be more..."seasonal" , yech. I know this because...I have next week off for vacation.

2012 looks like a Big year for Harley Davidson

Harley has received a new addition to the "Harley Davidson Museum" motorcycle collection. It is a rare 1934 CAC short track racer. They received it last December from a private east coast collector. the CAC was Harley's entry into Short-Track Speedway style dirt oval racing. only 20 of the bikes were built and 5 additional engines. Only 9 of the bikes are known to exist and one spare engine already in the museums collection. After restoration the bike should be on display in the Clubs and Competition gallery this year.

This (2012) is the 110th Anniversary of the Harley Davidson Motor Company and 30th Anniversary of HOG (Harley Owners Group).

After nearly 50 years of styling Willie G Davidson (Senior Vice President and Chief styling officer is set to retire on April 30th this year.

"Official" Sunday Ride Report

The ride was cool, for the first two hours, out from Dunkin Donuts.
The plan was to go through two or three states and we did.
We found ourselves 8 miles from Wrights Chicken Farm so a vote was taken and approved (in a church parking lot).

Seventeen people, Fifteen bikes and one (1) dirt road (about 300 feet long and a U turn).
Note: This doesn't qualify as a wrong turn as there was no sign, only dirt and a No thru truck sign.

We ran into Angelina Jolie, the House Mouse and Ms.Kaitlyn at the Dunkin Donuts at 14 and 169 "surprise and hugs".

160 miles from start...(300 miles for Mark and Door)

Too bad for Dana...now he has to wait until 2013 before getting to Wrights. "bad timing"

No fuel stops. and no pee stops...all ships returned at 4pm
R/C

The Sunday Ride

Saturday morning I dug out my Orange Helmet and found it was missing a screw off the visor, Did some hunting around and came up with zip to fix it. Was looking forward to the Sunday ride. I planned on hitting the sack around 8pm, waking up at 1am to watch the first Formula Race of the season, going to bed at 4am, then waking at 8 to be at the ride at 10am. Problem is, I got sick around 4 in the afternoon. I went to bed and woke up for the race, after the first half hour I went back to bed. Still sick

No ride for me.

It would appear from a text I received from Tree that the ride ended up at Wrights for salty roasted dead chicken carcasses and spaghetti. Not one of my favorite places but the ride is usually good.

My CB is up and operating

The bike came back from the shop and the CB now works. The cause is a little vague, The Tech told the service advisor that the unit did not work because the switch  (three way switch) was in the wrong position. The weird thing is, we tried the unit with the switch in every position. I believe the tech who installed it missed something but didn't want to have a "comeback", They don't get paid for those. If it was the switch, why did it take six hours to fix it?

Sunday Ride

There will be a ride on Sunday, AOB will be 10am from Dunkin Donuts on route 32 in Montville. The weather is suppose to be excellent and this ride has no destination. It will be a cruise for a cruise sake and lunch will be taken on the cuff when we come across someplace that looks good.

Bring a Helmet. (Two if you have a passenger), The ride may pass through Rhode Island, (If so your passenger will need one). The ride may pass into Massachusetts (in which case you both will need one) The ride may do neither. That is the type of ride it will be.

Where ever the route takes us the Road Captain is looking to have you home by 4pm or so.

Road Guards may be needed, First to arrive will be used, We like to have Four, three and myself..  Road Sergeants will only be used for Guards if there are not enough Guards available.

Since there is no determined path I can not promise you will be deployed, it will depend on the route and the Road Captain's discretion.

Thank you and have a spiffy week

Bikes at Mikes, Tom Couldn't & Dave is Angellina?

It is beautiful outside!!! Motorcycle weather!!! So...mine is back in the shop.  Mike's is looking into the CB volume issue.

Tuesday was Hypnotist night, They got Tom on the stage....nothin'.  They put Marty on stage....Nothin'

A member of the audience found it funny anyway, just the look on Tom's face while they attempted to Hypnotize him.

Dave Adams must have been working out...seems some of the hypno victims thought he was Angelina Jolie.

You know something....thinking about it.....

No...I don't see it, I can picture it...but I can't see it.

Although I have seen Dave stand like this, looking back over his shoulder.

I stopped by Saturday

Saturday I stopped by to watch the drill team at practice, They walk out the maneuvers before performing them so everyone is on the same page. As they walk each person should be a mirror of the one next to them, each turning exactly on time as if in a syncopated precision dance. Each person gliding along perfectly in harmony with those around them. Each person a part of a whole, flowing smoothly from direction to direction.

The leader shows the direction of the move with his arms. The rest are a mirror.

each person in perfect step

each a part of the whole

moving like they are linked.

like gears in a machine

one cohesive unit

syncopated

perfect

like a Swiss watch

everyone working as one

every step a demonstration in perfection.

producing a perfect flowing unit

I can't wait to see them do this on the bikes.

Sunday ride report

The ride today went good, but first half was cold.
12 or so bikes left D&D.
Arrived at Durham minus 3, (Linda Wolf, and Danny)
Vinny had four bikes there plus himself,
The trip to Goshen went well and we arrived at 12:30
Evert arrived from his appointment 10 min. later.
A good lunch was consumed
All ships returned 4PM

That was the official Road Captain recap of the ride.

Here is...the rest of the story...

The Club departed Dunkin Donuts with fourteen bikes. Tom leading, four Road Guards and myself as a useless tail gunner.

We headed up 163 where Linda and Wolf dropped off and headed north on 395. The rest of us picked up 395 south to route 1 in Flanders which took us to Halls road then I-95 across the Connecticut River. Route 9 north to route 80 in Chester. In Killingworth we took route 81 north, here Danny turned back because of a prior engagement. 81 took us to 148 then across to 79. 79 took us to 17 and a stop at Dunkin in Durham where we joined up with Vinny Pons and four other bikes. The ride up to this point had been a tad cool. Kaitlyn looked like a Popsicle, riding along frozen in position. At the Dunkin Willi split off south to New Haven while the rest of us headed north on 17.

From here Tom took us on back roads to come out across from Guidas in Middlefield, then 66 to 691. We cruised 691 to 84 west into Waterbury where we picked up route 8 north. Here's where I get a bit fuzzy, riding in the back watching the people ahead of me means I didn't actually pay attention to how we got to route 63, but we took  that through Watertown and Litchfield to Goshen and route 4. A left turn on route 4 and about a mile down the road we turned into AJ's Steak and Pizza. Evert arrived just as we ordered.

AJ's has really good food, and Joe's favorite thing...peanuts, which you can throw the shells on the floor after you are done eating. I had a Biker burger, Thick grass fed beef burger, thick cheddar cheese, onion rings and BBQ sauce on a bun. There were whole belly clams, Bison Burgers, steak sandwiches and salads devoured. A note though, if you like Garlic bread even a small order is too much. The bread is a loaf cut in half length wise, it is about 18" long, 8" wide, minced garlic and garlic cloves smothered in mozzarella cheese. It is damn good but it is enough for a group as an appetizer, I have no idea what a large order would look like. Rich had what appeared to be a Chef's salad, which comes in a mixing bowl. The bowl is about 14" across and 10" tall. I know of at least two people who packaged salad to take home.

Leaving AJ's Vinny and his crew headed off on their own as did Joe Fogarty. We headed back down 63 for gas below Litchfield. Evert took over the tail gun position as I moved up to replace Joe as a Guard. (Guards were not needed on the return trip). The return trip was almost a duplicate of the ride up except that we took 84, to 691 to 66 then crossed a few back roads to come out on route 9 south to Old Saybrook and 95 north as people dropped out.

All in all a really good day.

The reason I was a useless tail gunner on the ride up is that the CB install (that cost about $1400. parts and labor) wasn't exactly perfect. I can transmit and have good signal, when someone else transmits the radio mutes out as it should, but there is no CB signal, nothing comes over the speakers but dead air. So...it will be heading back to Mikes.

Sundays Ride Report February 26th

I lost this one in the mist... Or I was lost in the mist...

A.O.B. was delayed a few minutes so that Mike D. could warm his core with some coffee after the hour of riding it took for him to join us. It was sunny with a little wind and the bank said it was 42* when we left Dunkin and headed north on 32. I got to test my ABS on one of the lights coming down the hill to 2A, but no issues since Evert was alert and in formation. We headed over the Mohegan Pequot bridge and south on 12. We took 214 up to 2 then east to Ryder Rd. The back roads of North Stonington were very clean so we enjoyed a pretty brisk clip in single file over Wyassup to Reuteman, down 49 to Babcock back to Wyassup, which we took all the way back to 49 almost to Voluntown. We flew at highway speed all the way to 14A, turned east and according to Rich W. I had a "Tom" moment. I had mounted my GPS, but never turned it on, so can only blame myself. I took a left "way too early" and was lucky to find a back road that put us right back on 14A with little delay. We went through Oneco and parked at Weidele's just in time for George to join us for lunch. Good Pizza, good company - God I love this club! After lunch we all headed west on 14 to Central Village where we split up. Rich and I got on 395 South and blazed. The weather probably kept a lot of people home, but it turned out to be a very pleasant day. I didn't even turn on my heated gear until after lunch, and that was due to all my blood pooling in my belly!

Take care.

A familiar face

You know the face, just about everyone doe's I believe.

It was 9pm on a Friday night and a couple of your friends decide you should go out.

It starts off innocently enough, you go to a bar, you order a beer...maybe two.

Then someone buys a round of drinks, then someone else orders a round.

Of course you have to order a round.

Then about eleven or twelve someone decides you should have a shot, so they order a round.

The night progresses, the shots keep coming... it's last call then closing time. So you all stagger out to the cars, drive to restaurant.

Everyone knows you need to eat after that much alcohol. You order something light, like pancakes, jalapeno poppers and a clam roll.

Before you know it, everyone is heading home, you arrive at your house, fumble with the keys trying to unlock the door, you walk into the kitchen table and shhhh the silverware as it all rattles from the impact. After all, you don't want to hear it from your better half who is asleep.

You crawl under the covers and go to sleep.

The Alarm goes off, and after about a half hour you get up, your eyes are swollen shut so you feel your way into the bathroom, take a leak, walk over to the sink, place both hands on the sink edge to steady yourself as you look in the mirror.

You know...it's going to be a loooooong day.

Hello Members!!!!

If you have been following the Blog you may have noticed the "Who you riding next to" entries. If you haven't seen yourself there you need to get a hold of me. I need info, what you ride plus any little bits of info you may want on there. (Short bits please). I have quite a few pictures of the people I usually ride with or those that were at the photo shoot or participated with their bikes at the Rodeo. If you are not one of these you can either send me some or we can arrange to have some taken.

But please get in touch with me.  I have roughly twenty more people I can enter photos of easily but do not have enough info, unless the amount of time you have been in the club is enough and you don't want anyone to know what you ride (or own). After those people I have nothing at all.

You can contact me on Thursdays at the Club, on Sundays on the rides or drop me an e-mail.

Sunday Ride Report

Sunday Ride? There wasn't one right? That's what I thought. At Thursday's meeting there was no Road Captain, Honor Guard Captain or Road Guard Captain, and strangely enough.. no Adamses. The meeting I am told was a quick one and there was no mention of a ride.

Myself, I have been wanting to put some mileage on the bike since it came out of the shop, so I talked to Danny on Friday and we figured we'd hit the road on Sunday.

So...Sunday morning I went to the Equinox for breakfast, at 9:30am I was sitting at the counter drinking my coffee when the cel phone rang, it was Dave Adams. He said he had been at the Moose for breakfast and that people were talking about today's ride, leaving at 11 from Dunkin. He said he was on call and could not lead a ride, I told him that I did not believe there actually was one.

I called Danny and we decided we would head to DD and hang around till eleven to see who may show and we would go from there. When I arrived I found Danny and Rich Woodhall outside talking, I pulled in and we moved inside, Dave Adams showed up shortly afterwards.

A little after eleven, Rich headed home to the wife, Dave headed to work, Danny and I headed up 163. I have to say here that the temperature was hovering around 40 degrees, so I wore my skunk fuzzy, but left the heated gear in the saddlebag. We cruised up 163 to Fitchville then crossed over to 87. When we hit Lebanon I pulled in at the town hall and switched to heated gear. (The fingers were a tad cold). We cruised up 207 to 85, crossed 66 and took east street (which becomes Hebron rd) to Bolton. We took Bolton Center road to Steeles Crossing down to route 6. We turned left onto South Street and ran through Nathan Hale State Park and the Homestead. Through the Rotary, through Coventry, past the pizza house and turned onto Cross Street, then Lake, and down Monument Hill road to come out across the street from Bidwells. We had lunch (wings, love their Garlic Pepper, it goes good with Scotch and Coke). After lunch we decided it was too early to give up riding so we headed up 31 to 44 and took that east through Mansfield Depot, Storrs, Warrenville and Ashford. Up this way the temperature was down around 35 and the ground all around was covered in that winter white stuff. In Abington we turned south on 97 down through Hampton and Scotland to Sprague, then through Baltic to Taftville where we picked up route 12 into Norwich. in Norwich we picked up route 2 but turned onto Palmer Street (Middle Road) and took that down to 2A in Poquetanuck. (Ask Rich Woodhall about the time I took him down this road (he didn't care for the jump too much)). We turned left on 2A then right on Cider Mill (Avery Hill) to 214. A left on 214 then a right on Whalehead to Sandy Hollow, down the drag strip at the reservoir to 117, then across onto Lambtown. Lambtown to Wendell Comrie to Gallup Hill and Shewville into Old Mystic. A quick ride down rte 27 brought us to the Equinox for coffee. After coffee it was a quick hop on 95 to New London. The ride was about 140 miles long, not that far a trip but it felt great to be cruising on the bike. All in all it was a pretty good day, especially considering...there was no ride today.

MOOSE FOOD!!!!

Patti Duerrler's Moose Club breakfast fundraiser is this Sunday, March 4th.

Anyone?

One of the guys I work with found this picture of his late father on an old Indian motorcycle. He figures the time frame to be around 1950 or so. He was wondering if anyone in the club might have any information on the possible year and type of bike it might be.

Anyone recognize this guy?

 Thanks.

Just another fuzzy flashback

I was looking through the collection of photos for pictures of people for the "Who you Riding next to" entry's and I came across this photo from the Banquet....

Remember the banquet?

I'm not sure they do.
